I am constructing a layout based on a 19th century prototype and some of the people on my thread seem interested in comparing photos of the prototype with photos of models. I have two questions: 1. What are the rules on uploading historic photos (or other illustrations) scanned from books or taken from other websites e.g. libraries, museums, or historical societies? 2. What are the rules for uploading photos of commercially available products from manufacturer's or other modeller's sites to compare them for prototype fidelity or era/locale suitability? Thank you for your time and assistance.
Thank you for asking the question prior to posting. We don't want to violate any copyrights, etc. If you are posting any photo(s) on TrainBoard, make sure you have permission to do so. Images on other web sites can be linked to. Don't embed the image(s) in the post unless you have permision but it is fine to post a link to a page where the photo is. As far as manufacturer's images, most manufacturers seem happy for people to perpetuate their products so there is usually no problem there unless people are trashing the product(s), then they would not be so happy. For your purpose, probably fine. Images from books is a tough one. Most people don't mind "fair use" stuff but to scan a photo from a book and post it here is probably generally a bad idea. If the photo is so old that no one would mind then it would probably be fine but most books are probably a no-go. I hope that addresses all of the questions. Charlie
