My visit there, 20yrs ago...the memories were in "B&W", I think because I only could recall the pics I took in Tri-X of that visit. But I found one roll of color I took around the yard at Helper, so I don't feel so senile now. Enjoy!

Last time I was in Helper, I was living in Grand Junction, CO, and the missus and I were coming back from a weekend trip to Wendover, NV after taking advantage of a free 3-day stay at the Rainbow Casino. At Wendover, the only RR in town is UP's ex-Western Pacific main, which parallels I-80 across the south end of the Salt Flats. Didn't see any RR action except for one manifest going west. Only other places we saw were the Bonneville Raceway (where the land speed runs are held) and the old airbase where the B29 that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki was undergoing training (if you've ever seen the movie "Con Air", the airbase was featured).

    Back to the story......

Going home, we went on US 6 out of Spanish Fork, past the Gilluly Loops and over Soldier SUmmit, and down the canyon thru Castle Gate to Helper. I got shots of one of Utah's MK5000s, and also shots of the SD40T-2s kept as helpers and Dirt Train power. All were unpatched at the time.

For some railfanning trips to Helper, I'd recommend checking out Jim Harrawood's site, Utah Rails . Yep, it's done by our very own Slimjim. I recommend the site, not just because I think he's a great photographer, but because of the awesome info (yes, and great pics) you'll find.
