Last night I was having a lot fun because I was running a DCC engine(GN SD7) from Atlas. This is the first time that I have run a engine with DCC. There is still a lot to learn. I like how it starts out slowly, then picks up speed. I have not tried to change anything yet. Just taking baby steps right now. The DCC set I am using is Lenz set 100 that Powersteamguy1790 has recommended to a lot of us. The one question I have is what functions come with an all ready equipped decoder.
I have a couple of engines I purchased w/ the decoder installed, LifeLike w/ the QSI. I believe the QSI comes in the Atlas engines as well, I am not sure. However, the engines usually come w/ a decoder manual that will explain the functions, CV's, etc. I know a QSI manual was packed in w/ my LifeLike units.
Does it list the decoder part number? If so, perhaps take that info, and visit their web site? Boxcab E50
Alan: The Lenz decoder in your SD-7 has all functions except BEMF. It does have lighting functions so you can play with that. I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying your first run with a DCC loco. You'll never look back. If you have any other questions, let me know. Have fun. Stay cool and run steam....
Wiking, me too! I just started my DCC a couple weeks ago, and yes, YIPPEE is my comment also. I'm amazed at being able to run trains in opposite directions, realistic MUing and helpers, parking locos anywhere you want, it goes on and on and on. At first I was a bit worried about the locos that are not easily converted. Screw that, I'm getting new equipment! I'll keep a few DC pieces. Agreed, not looking back.
Steve: I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying DCC. All loco's can be converted to DCC. Yes, you'll never look back. Look at all the fun you're having. Stay cool and run steam.....
Powersteam, Whats the difference between Lenz and Digitrax, I have run the Digitrax before and loved it, what does Lenz offer that is better? I was planning on getting the Digitrax for my layout but may be persueded to go a different route.
Andy: The Lenz systems are easier to run, have an easier learning curve, have a great warranty and great support from Lenz North America. The warranty and support from Debbie Ames who heads Lenz North America is outstanding. They give lifetime upgrades, will replace any defective component of the DCC system without a charge. The same goes for Lenz decoders. They will replace a defective or blown out decoder, no questions asked. Try to get that from Digitrax. I've never been a big fan of Digitrax DCC systems. If you don't like the Lenz DCC systems I would then look at a NCE DCC system. Stay cool and run steam....
DITTO BOB! Debbie has been very helpful whenever I have questions and can't wait to get my first Gold Decoders! Have Set 90 because always preferred dial throttle. Next thing I want to get is a USP Module! TTFN...Old Tom in NH P.S. Tony's Train Exchange in VT has GREAT Lenz prices on everything they offer and they do a landmark mail order business!
I've been using the new Lenz mini gold decoders. They really are great if you don't have much space to work with. Stay cool and run steam....
I look forward to the day I have a Lenz system. That will be after I get a new job at a good wage. At 51, that might not happen. Oh well, I would rather help children learn than have more trains. Maybe I'll hit the lottery, oh, wait, first I have to buy a ticket.
I generally do not recommend anything I buy/bought as the next person may have difficulties. The problem may be his own doing but none the less he then thinks I don't know what I am talking about. HOWEVER... I do fully recommend LENZ for at least 3 reasons: 1. Support if needed is excellent with fast response. 2. Their equipement is first class in both appearance and quailty. 3. They really do have a no questions asked warranty. You will never regret buying quality!
He he he. Grey, you sound like me. I took about two years to finally break down and get a DCC system. Lenz is really good but there are cheaper setups out there. Based on your track plan you may not need a super dooper DCC set. I finally opted for the Digitrax zephyr. I wanted lenz mind you. Zephyr has a neat trick where you can connect two of your old analog power packs to these jumpers on it and create additional DCC cab controls. For me it was like instant freebie two cab system for me and my buddy to play trains at the same time. Start filling that penny jar, or else sell your concor zephyr on ebay and get a DCC system. But back to the original comment. I do my Mr'ing on a shoestring these days. It seems to work.
He he he. Grey, you sound like me. I took about two years to finally break down and get a DCC system. Lenz is really good but there are cheaper setups out there. Based on your track plan you may not need a super dooper DCC set. Bachmann has a starter set that would get you going. I finally opted for the Digitrax zephyr. I wanted lenz mind you. For me it was like instant freebie two cab system for me and my buddy to play trains at the same time. No matter what DCC system you go for, It's just a glorified power pack, you can always sell it and get another one. Dcc people make it seem like something of a self worth issue when it comes to what system you get. It doesn't matter what system you get, all that matters is that you get a system to start with! Start filling that penny jar, or else sell your concor zephyr on ebay and get a DCC system. But back to the original comment. I do my Mr'ing on a shoe string these days also. It seems to work. I get more quality time out of a old paint brush and a new jar of paint, than I do out of the latest Pre painted RTR engine.
