I need a diagram of a grade crossing with measurments so that I can have everything properly positioned. Anyone know of any online?
I am not aware of any online. I have Kachina Press Santa Fe standards books which have all sorts of right-of-way clearance, setback and signage requirements for a number of different states on the Santa Fe system. I also have a photcopy I made of segments of a 1953 Houston, Texas railroad grade crossing study which has scale drawings of some 25 critical grade crossings, with dimensions AND photos from a motorists and train engineers point of view approaching the intersection. Tell me about your grade crossing situation.... Two lane state highway with shoulders somewhere out in the boondocks? Country back road? Residential street? Commercial street in medium size town? Small crowded street in inner city warehouse district of big city? http://www.railimages.com/albums/kennethanthony/agb.jpg
Siting diagram for crossing with distance table- http://csx-sucks.com/SiteDist.pdf Non-illuminated crossing diagram (sans dimensions) - http://www.tfhrc.gov/humanfac/01105/chp5rec.htm I couldn't find any reference to the ground plans, either. The above links may allow you to extrapolate dimensions. I may have crossing layout diagrams for the Soo somewhere.
This will be a two lane (one lane each direction) rural comercial road with a paved sholder. this will be a dubble yellow line, white lines on the side. 1. With of standard 2 lane (one each direction) road: 25' including sholder after white line, correct? 2. Placement of crossbucks... lenth from rail, lenth from road? 3. Placement of vehicle stop line on road, lenth from rail, and its with (2' i belive) 4. Placement of RXR paint on roadway, lenth from rail? 5. Placement of Xing signal control box? 6. Telephone pole layout over track? Are they extended? do the cables go underground? 7. Placment of yellow rXr sign, lenth from rail?
Daniel, Try the Fallen Flags site: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org don't recall the specific page, but I know I have seen the type of spec you are looking for there. These specs do vary quite a bit from different areas and time periods.
Daniel, Perhaps this will link will help? The PDF document looks to be from Indiana State University. RRHWY
2. Placement of crossbucks... lenth from rail, lenth from road? 5 foot blade crossbucks "in position to give best view to one approaching the crossing from either direction on the highway, not less than 14 feet nor more than 20 feet from nearest rail." 4 foot blades to be used only in close clearance situations. Crossbuck post or signal light post or clearance point of crossing gate usually 6 foot from edge of roadway but not less than 4 feet. 3. Placement of vehicle stop line on road, lenth from rail, and its with (2' i belive) (I believe this is highway dept. standard, not provided by RR standard) 4. Placement of RXR paint on roadway, lenth from rail? (I believe this is highway dept. standard, not provided by RR standard) 5. Placement of Xing signal control box? (not found in Standards book) 6. Telephone pole layout over track? Are they extended? do the cables go underground? (not found in Standards book) 7. Placment of yellow rXr sign, lenth from rail? (I believe the ADVANCE "RR Xing ahead) is highway dept. standard, not provided by RR standard) There is also a rectangular silver or white "Private Crossing" sign, distance not specified by RR standard. Hope this helps a little.
You could probably find the information in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. I think I remember seeing a section or two on markings and grade crossings. http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno-millennium_12.18.00.htm Good Luck!
