Will an Atlas GP40-2 shell fit on a GP40 frame?

    Randy:

The Atlas GP40-2 will fit on a GP40 frame. I am agreeing with Kis to give you a confirming opinion on this question. ;) [IMG]

Another confirmation... I have done this based on earlier conversions... I have not tried it on the newest 2004 releases

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I am thinking of aquiring/updating some units that have high mileage.

Any of the GP38 or GP40 shells will fit on the GP chasis. I have several early model GP38s and older release GP40s that I have mounted on current release frames with perfect fit.

Likewise the GP30 and GP35 shells will both fit any release of that series of frames.

And while we are discussing chasis shell swaps the new Atlas SD-24 chasis will fit the older SD-35 shell. But trucks may not be proto for the SD35 from the SD24, due to some minor placement changes from EMD. That may not matter to some.

The big thing next to the slow speed motor is the LED light which is much brighter in recent releases (SD24) and will make a big differance in a SD35 (could light up the whole interior of the cab).

    Mike,

I ordered a PC light board with the LED from Atlas for my SD-35. That, and the slower motor make it a perfect running mate for the new SD-9, which incidentally also shares the same chassis, except for a tiny, tiny edge on one corner.

    William,
What you have done is the plan I am working on, but I had the shells off my SD 24's adding a few more decals to make my SOU accurate for a later date in their history on the Rd. Some how one fell to the floor and a big foot crushed it. [IMG] ..then as luck would have Atlas announced another run of the SD24 with the later verison for a July release. I placed the new SD24 chasis on a well worn SD35 . Pairing the SD35 with Kato or later model Atlas loco is now much better, even handling yard work.

I hope the new GP's & all future locos continue with the new light board, wow, some compalin its too bright, & it is for MU'd trailing units but for a loco on the point they are very proto compared to the blue light of the Kato. For this to occur maybe the older loco's will have to have the new head light shaft added to the shell, and somehow block the windows from lighting up.

    Later,
    ~ Mike
