I have a GP35 all painted up and weathered as Western Maryland 3579. Now, I need to install the plow on the front and rear. I never detailed engines much beofre, and never a plow. How do I go about doing this with out destroying the whole pilot (like with a GP38-2 in a previous project  ) also, a medium shank, centered head coupler fit?

    THANKS!

    What make is the GP35?

Fitting Details west plows is not to hard as they tend to come with a drilling template, it is always best to do any drilling before you paint anything, but its not always possible to do (if adding to an existing unit). only thing to make sure with is that you do not mount it to low, I did one at prototypical hight and every slight dip in the track (and my track there are lots!) it shorted out, i find that if you can fit a bit of .040" plastic between it and the rails it will be fine and still look ok.

    Good luck!

Forgot to say, yes you will need a medium shank coupler, not sure about the centered head unless I know of the make of the GP35

Athearn GP35. On the bottom of the pilots there are step-like "protrusions" that seem to be in the way of the plow, would I need to trim them off?

Yes. The footboards and MU hose "catch" boxes aren't needed, and would get in the way of a plow. Cut/trim them off with an xacto knife and file, and do any needed sanding and touch up. Drill mounting holes for the DW plow; use the template they give, and be sure you have it at the proper height off the railhead, as well as centered. Otherwise, you might start hitting low spots, like what happend to Stickymonk (and myself!). That's about it - just make sure you have the drill holes in the right spot and you should be ok. If you use KD trip pins, you'll need a longer shank KD to clear the plow.
