Anyone recogize this little engine? Hey, wait, how'd my mug get in here! Oh well... The cute one is Glen. Notice the camera in his hand? I'm starting him early.
Isn't that one of those l'il jobs that was used to move the electrics around the engine yard and roundhouse? I think there's a photo somewhere (taken at Deer Lodge?) showing just a such task in progress. Will try to locate it.:tb-err: Hey Hemi ... look what I found on the Fallen Flags site. They list it as a "shop switcher": Additionally check out page 57 "Under Milwaukee Wires" by Wm. C. Janssen ... the photos show X3800 was painted black. 'N' Joy ... :tb-cool:
Indeed, that is the Deer Lodge shop switcher. It was electric, and ran off an extension cord, IIRC. Here's a shop building at Harlo: A switchstand: A stubbed trolley pole (I think): And a pile of old track materials:
The Harlo sand tower: An old service area: A snowplow near the depot: I'm guessing this is the backside of the roundhouse?
I wish I was old enough to see it. I never saw an inch of MILW track being operated by MILW. I guess I was born too late.
Got a chance to look up the ice cave near Smyrna, WA the other day. Supposedly was used by locals and the MILW for cold storage. Not much is left, except for an old door frame, and evidence of a cave-in behind it, judging by the way slope was shaped behind the frame. No feeling of cold anywhere near it. One lady from Othello has said she used to go there as a girl and sit on the frame, and that it was quite cold. Comparing this one to the ice cave near the old Great Northern Mansfield (WA) branch in Moses Coulee, the Moses Coulee one, while equally caved in, still was producing ice in the basalt talus slope.
I knew about the sand tower, but the oil tower's a new one on me. Thanks for clarifiying! The Harlowton depot area has a rail trail leading west. Here's a sign that greets you: A sign in front of the depot gives a little history: The Harlo depot has been painted maroon & orange, with a curiously green roof.... ...Which weathers the maroon to a lovely shade of purple....
This is one of the troubles we have, when people who are trying to guess the official Milw structure colors. The effects of time, weather, prep work, paint type, etc... Fortunately, paint chips and B&B data exists, which disproves many rumors. But we still have the people out there, who won't read and comprehend. Someone out there probably thinks that pink is correct..... Boxcab E50
Pat, I donno the history behind it, but a wider shot is in post 86:TrainBoard.com - View Single Post - Ghosts of the Milwaukee--Lines West
It's a precious relic. Not many seem to have survived. They were quite unique. There were once several in my original vicinity. Boxcab E50
Argh! I can't remember where it was sitting, before being moved to Harlowton. Lewistown? Ringling? Oh well. It was in eastern Montana.... :tb-embarrassed: Boxcab E50
Good God man!!! People who don't know any better think it's and old "All you can eat" buffet joint that was closed down! Better to go with two-tone gray and call it good.
Problem is that area is wounded, badly, economically. When the RR left, it gutted the town. They don't have many resources, to maintain any of those displays, or depot. Plus, local STUPID kids have done some damage at times... Boxcab E50
