I'm looking for some prototype drawings of the GE Dash 8-40C or C40-8 (which ever you want to call it) in the configuration used by UP. Also want prototype drawings of the wide cab version also. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Jake: The August 1989 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has drawings of the GE Dash 8-40C. The January 1991 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has drawings of the Dash 8-40CW. Hope that helps. Chris Toth
Just think about how you read the locomotive for a minute. It is a "Dash 8" correct? Well, if you read C40-8, you say "C forty dash eight" - hence the name. If you read Dash 8-40C, then you'd say "Dash eight dash forty C" (Kinda like SD40-2, etc. - you say "SD forty dash two"). All railroads are different, though, and I've seen BNSF C44s labeled (on the side of the loco, mind you) Dash 9-44CW.
In magaiznes, locomitves side and technical documents I have seen it all these ways C40-8 Dash 8-40C 8-40C C-840 (I think that was a misprint) 40-8C 8-C40 C8-40 (also may have been a misprint) add the W and I have seen all these C40-8W Dash 8-40CW 8-40CW CW40-8 C40-8 (I guess they decided not to include the W because it bacame a standard) Then the wierdest thing I have EVER seen was C30-6 a name used by someone to discribe a U30C which in all technicallity really does make sense!!!
I think last year Model Railroader had drawings of the UP C40-8Ws. Don't remember the issue month though...
