Although more of a reference book, the BN Annuals by F. Hol Wagner are one of the best sources of information. And there are hundreds of great pics to look at too!! Rick Mills' "High Line Scrapbook" covers both the "Q" and the BN in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Joe Hardy wrote some great books on the "Q" also. He would usually include some of his personal experiences.
I only have 1 book on the BNand its the motive power book. havent looked at it in some timeand dont remember the title or author. Tom
Most of my "BN" books are BNSF. I do have F. Hol Wagner's book on the C&S and FW&D, which I consider sacred. One book that I think is awesome actually looks more like a "coffee table" book but really has some good info and spectacular photos. It's titled "Burlington Northern and Its Heritage" by Steve Glischinski. So I guess that's my favorite BN book, although really I don't have too many others.
I never met a BN book I didn't like. The Annuals are great, Northwest Passage is great........ Get my point? Tom
Wendover, Acme and Virginia Point is one of my well-worn faves. B&W but full of mid-70's coal drags, lots of U30C's and C30-7's. I have a couple del Grosso annuals, too, plus BN Diesel Locomotives - 3 decades of BN power. There's even a couple of others still packed safely away.
Hmmm... My 1st BN book was the Green Machines. Still a goodie after all these years. More Green Machines is good. All of the books you all mentioned above. Abebooks has a bunch of BN annuals for under $40 right now. Others of a more fringe BN interest are: The Camas Prairie: Idaho's Railroad On Stilts Burlington Northern Caboose Book Burlington Northern: Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment Burlington Northern Adventures: Railroading in the Days of the Caboose A few were not my favorites, but had some interesting info: Burlington Northern. Into the 90's. Motive Power Pictorial The History of the Burlington Northern Burlington northern and the Dedication of Mount St. Helens
Northern Pacific Diesel Era is excellent. The 1st two GN Pictorals by Four Ways West were good. Are any of the books on the BN predecessors bad?
Dan, You are one of the few that now of the existance of More Green Machines.I have been looking for a copy of that book myself. If you know of anywhere I can get it please let me know. The Green Machines is a great book.I have so many BN books and it is my favorite.I just need the follow up to make that set complete.
More Green Machines Ed, Try Abebooks.com. Enter the name of the book. I found 2 copies there a few minutes ago, but the cheap one was $65. I've been watching Ebay for one for a very long time now.
I have 3 of the NP pictorials, 6 og the GN 5 CBQ Pictorials and 2 SPS Books. Plus others, all books on BN predissors are wonderful!
I agree! I have the 2 Iconographx GN Photo Archive books, GN color guide, SP&S color guide, and a couple NP route histories--Mullan Pass and Homestake Pass. Curiously, nothing of Q origin, though... Most of my books are D&RGW as well. I also have a few coffee table generic RR picture books. By and large, my all-time fav is Leachmann's NWP.:w20z6q:
