I'm need help figuring out how to install working porch-mounted dightlights. Are there any tutortials out there? I plan on these being used with DC.
    Thanks

    Marshall,

I've done several locos with porch mounts as well, just haven't taken pictures as yet.

It gets tricky. There is (was) a fellow modeler selling SMD (Surface Mount Device) LEDs glued into ditch light castings, he was reasonable as I recall, and I did a couple SD40-2s using those.

I'm currently working on an Athearn SD75I but as I am on vacation at the moment am not getting too much done!

You can buy the Sunrise castings and drill and file them out for the SMD LEDs which you can purchase from Richmond Controls, by buying from him you can get the shade of white LED you want and not have to fudge with coloring the LEDs. ACC will work to glue the SMD into the casting and the casting to the porch, but you need to paint it to eliminate light spill.

Routing the wires in the 75I is not difficult but you must remove the cab to get at the inside, a job that is not for the squeamish!

You will want to test frequently as you go. And I am DCC, so bear that viewpoint in mind!

Just as an example, here's a loco I did using a Richmond Controls module and surface mount LEDs behind some Sunrise ditchlight housings...

Very nice. When travelling along the freeway at night, I can see the locomotives by the walkway lights. Has anyone put in these lights? They are very tiny lights, and dim, but clearly picked out.

...yeah, I like working ditchlights on N scale engines.
this are pictures of the NHV GP38 I have painted for Brian (txcavgr) and I've used smd LEDs and sunrise parts as well

"today I would also use sunny white LEDs..."

"ok, from the side the ditchlights are somehow a littlebit "thick" but hey..." ;)

Adding porch lighting would be quite an accomplishment... I know what you are talking about, but these would be extremely tiny in N scale. You could probably represent them with fibre optics, but I have not seen them done.
