Are the Atlas Difco Dump cars the same tooling as the older Walthers units? If so, did Atlas add anything to them? If not, how do the Atlas units compare to the Walthers units? Any help would be appreciated.
The Atlas Difco Dump cars are the same tooling as the older Walthers units but I do not know what changes Atlas may have made other than probably the Atlas trucks and knuckle couplers and the packaging they come in. I have a few of the Wathters version that I converted to M/T's and they are nice cars. Wouldn't mind adding a few more to the fleet at some point.
I have some of both (Milw.rd. in Walthers and MRL in Atlas) and the only difference is the trucks. There isn't much on the Difcos to upgrade without major retooling, which wouldn't really make sense since I'm sure Atlas is trying to recover the costs of the tooling purchase. They did the same with the snow plows.
