Can someone explain exactly what is meant by Phase1, Phase 2, Phase 3 for diesels?

I have a basic idea, modifications done over time each phase being a specific series, but other than that I haven't figured out much else.

    Thanks,

    Martin

Basically, what you describe, is how phases are noted.

The first run (Phase 1) of unit "X" is supplanted by a newer ( Phase 2) production. It has a few slight modifications or upgrades. Thus is definitely different.

Then there is nit-picky stuff, where folks break it down more finely. Such as Phase 1a, Phase 1b, etc. Some of this is actually noted by the builder. And some seems to be created by railfans.

Sometimes changes are very obvious. Other times internal. So you cannot even see a difference.

    It can be confusing!

Sounds like the same thing they did with airplanes... P51A, P51B, C, D etc.... Refinements that usually involved adding more weight than horsepower, but turning out a better product (most times)

The phase terminology began with Extra 2200 South magazine in their review of the F3 diesels. Specifically, it was for the high/low fan issue, but it became popular to describe other diesels as you have stated above. As such, it is a railfan thing. Manufacturers refer to changes as options or model differences.

BTW, that issue of Extra 2200 South is one of the most extensive descriptions of F units I have ever seen.

    Yeah, sapacif is right...

Most of the "phases" are driven by railfans after the fact, not by manufacturers... If you notice, most all new product manufactureres now state " production items may differ from illustrations..."

    Thanks Gents,

Any resources out there which correlate phases with locos, date and technical specifics?

Long story short is that I'm collecting diesels for my pike now and I'd like to makes sure that I stay within certain dates, no latter than 1952.

    Thanks again,

    Martin
