I'm free-lancing my layout. As I've never done this before (I mean, I never free-lanced-I've been into model railroading for 20 years), I have a question about it: where can I find decals and dry transfer that aren't in a specific road name? [IMG]

Hi. I use GMC Rail, a custom decal provider. You can either provide artwork or give him an idea of what you want and he will submit proofs for your approval. The decals are thin and apply well. Click on the link and go to the Photo Gallery, there is a photo of one of my JGL locos there. I am currently waiting for delivery of custom decals for NYC P motors. No one made these in lightning stripes, so Gary at GMC has done so for me. He's a real pleasure to work with, and prices are good. Check it out!http://www.sound.net/~gcollins/GMCRail1.html

Both Micro Scale and Champ make sheets of just letters and numbers.

For dry transfers try an electronic store, not radio shack, a real electronic store. The have sheets of letters and numbers that are a better value than the ones sold at hobby stores. I bought a dry transfer sheet from a hobby store, and it had about 6 "O"s on it, enough for me to do one free lanced car in my railroad name. I got a sheet from an electronic store that had about 20 of each letter.

later I went to Rail Graphics to get decals made. It cost $35.00 for me to get enough decals to do 50 cars.

Now I use an Alps printer I bought off ebay.

I will second the motion on GMC Rail. Gary makes GREAT decals and is wonderful to work with. He helped me figure out what I needed and then produced great decals at a good price.

For my High Desert & Sierra Railroad I produce my own decals on my computer with Publisher or Corel. Then I make a copy to a floppy disk and take it to the printshop. The guys at the printshop can print my work to Microscale`s "Thinfilm white or clear" with a laser printer. The result is not bad as you can see on the pictures below :D
Good luck with your own project
