What happens when you put decals on flat paint? I have always used them on gloss paint like most people say then use dull coat on them. I was just wondering what would happen on flat paint! Seems like you would be saving a step.

You may end up with white marks behind the decal where it has not adhered to the paint. Sometimes they are likely to come off if the paint is very flat! Better to apply to gloss paint of clear coating then apply dullcote afterwards.

No short cuts for a perfect job ;)

I believe that the gloss paint leaves a really smooth surface (which is why it looks shiny). Flat paint is actually a rough surface which does not reflect light as much. Therefore, Alan is right. You want to apply your decals to a smooth surface so that you don't get air and residues behind the decal resulting in white streaks. For a good decal job, you will have to keep ALL of the steps in there.

Alan is indeed correct. A decal needs that smooth surface to adhere properly. After which you can do dull coat, weathering, etc.
