In the past, I've installed a decoder into a HO engine, but I don't want to attempt it in N scale. Are there any places out there where you can send them the engine and decoder (or purchase the decoder from them) and they install it?
Usually your local train store can do it or point you to someone who can. However not every town has has a good place to go. I used to instal DCC decoders for Train Source in Houston but found I had no time for my own modeling so quit. As far as mailing them out I think Loy's Toys may do it.
Tony's Trains routinely installs decoders in loco's of all scales. Why don't you contact them. They happen to do an excellent job 1-800-978-3472 http://www.tonystrains.com Stay cool and run steam.....
There isn't a train store anywhere around me with capabilities like that. Its an hour's drive to get to one that has anything other than model power and bachmann. I've Seen Tony's and was hoping to find someplace a little cheaper than $49 plus the cost of the decoder. But if I can't find one, thats the route I'll go. I will be buying my DCC from Tony's in the very near future.
Bruce at Licthfield Station (Arizona) does it. I don't know his price. It may be posted on his website: http://www.litchfieldstation.com He has good prices on decoders and free shipping over $48.
What brand/model loco's do you have, and how many? I've done numerous N and HO scale for myself, along with a few friends. PM me if you're interested. John
