I had one heck of a time getting both the bottom headlight and the upper mars light to work on my Proto E8 with DCC. The board on the Proto unit is screwy and when you plug a decoder in to it the lights dont work properly. I found a few different instructions on how to fix this on the web but none worked. Or at least they didnt work for me. Here's what I did to solve this problem in my unit.

Before installed a MRC 1650 decoder in the unit I moved the yellow rear headlight wire from pin 2 on the plug to pin 3. The pinout diagram can be found here http://www.wiringfordcc.com/locos.htm about three quarters of the way down the page. Once installed I then set the front and rear headlamp to both be on all the time by setting CV 60 to a value of 2. This way when you turn on the headlight both bulbs light up with the mars light working the way it is supposed to. If you want to be able to turn each light on or off independantly you can remove the wire for one of the lights from the loco's circiut board (not the common wire) and solder it to the F2 solder tab on the back of the decoder and then control the light that way. Either way it works and its an easy fix. Now get that decoder installed and get that passenger run going, its already behind schedule.
