I saw CSX 4406 about a week ago near where I live. I was wondering whether it was a GP40, GP40-2, or GP50? I couldn't tell. Anyone know or know where to look?

Hi Ted, welcome to Trainboard. [IMG] CSXT 4406 is a GP40-2; neither CSX or its predecessors purchased GP50s. But they definitely have lots of GP38s, GP38-2s, and GP40-2s to go around. :D A good site you can reference for pics and info on CSX power is http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/ Lots of pics of CSX units in their different schemes, as well as rosters and other useful info. It's a great site, and I use it often.

I was not aware that CSX had GP40-2s in the 4400 series. All the ones I have seen are in the 6200 series.

The 44xx series contains the GP40-2's that CSX inherited from Conrail. There were only about 50 units. You are correct, as most of the GP40-2's are in the 6000 series (6000 to 6499); The GP40's occupied 6500 to 68?? ; then the GP40-2's were 6900 to 69??. [sorry, no references in front of me, I am working off memory  ] I think the 6900 series came from rebuilt GP40-2's that were outfitted as road mate "parents".

By the way, are there any unrebuilt CSX GP40's left in regular service?

I too thought that CSX didn't have no GP-40-2's in the 4400 series! I thought the 4400 series was GP-30's or GP-30 based road slugs!? [IMG]

I checked the photos on my website for reference http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/csx.htm

GP30's were in the 41xx to 42xx series (I think dependent upon whether or not they had been rebuilt). GP39's went from 4280 to 4299; GP39-2's went from 4300 to 4319; GP35's were numbered from 4320 to 439?

The road slugs are in the 22xx and 23xx series.

I made a slight mistake, the 4400 series I was saying about I thought they were the full fledged GP-30's. Not the road slugs! They later made them road slugs! Anyway I seem to have remembered seeing a B&O GP-30 in the Sunburst sceme in the early 90's and on into the middle 90's.... So.. But, its been to long ago to remember forsure. This was before I got into railfanning! So, all off memory... I'll have to see if I can find anything....

Wow. Go away for the weekend and you miss a lot. Thanks for the welcome. I am not an expert on real trains. I live fairly close to the CSX East-West double track line that runs trough N. Baltimore Ohio. Actually I think it is around 200 feet away. However, my veiw is obstructed by a house, garage, trees and grain cars. I do get see some trains though. Mostly CSX. I have seen. Conrail, UP, BN, and NS. Most active of the other roads I would say is UP. I have seen a few of the flag units. Oh I forgot the lease units too.

Anyway CSX #4406 spent a night on a siding in N. Baltimore with some cranes of some kind. Then it left the cranes there. I forgot to check this morning to see if they were still there. Thanks for the link to check on engines.
