Conrail SD70 Macs and SD80 Macs color of Walkways

Hi folks
Anyone out there know what color the walkways and steps are on Conrail's sd 70/80 macs? Kato's release has them in blue but some pics on the net have them in black. Were they released in blue paint and then got grimed or were they black to start with ??

 

If memory serves me right (well it does sometimes ) The walkways on all Conrail hood units ,except for some repaints were painted black.At least mine will be.

 

I have just looked at some pics of Conrail 80macs and it looks like the walkway on the front of the cab is white,But I can't tell what the sides are.

Yeah, I thought so. Seem to remember Kato goofed on another walkway recently too. I just picked up a pair on eBay, guess I gotta paint the walkways.

It jogged my memory and I found and old main line modeler magazine from 1989. There was an article on "Conrail GE painting guide by Warren Calloway pp73-76. The painting and drawing diagrams call for the entire body to be blue. The steps and pilot were black as were the horizontal walkway surfaces. The trucks and underframe were black. The grab irons and handrails were painted blue except for the handrails at the stepwells which were white. The bottom step edge at each step well was also painted white. On units equipped with snowplows the grab irons mounted to the plow were also white.

The same scheme carried over to the EMD units also which is corelated with the conrail cyclopedia site.

I was also able to find enough pictures from diesel era and 220 south to verify all this stuff.

Atlas, Kato both missed the boat on this one. It looks like its time to take out the old paint brush and start detailing

For painting the white on the handrails I found that Testors Pactra racing finish paint RC51 sprint white adhers to the delrin handrails extremely well unlike polyscale s or modelflex paints.
