When I saw the photos of Dave's scale skateboard and ramp, it inspired me to ask the members if they include other hobbies into their model railroading world. For me, right now I can say yes I do. As a buff, I have a fire scene, police scene, and being the World's Best Sidewalk Superintendent I have street construction scenes. I also love trucks, so there are plenty of them on my layout. [ 23. Sounds really cool. As a brand new guy designing my first layout my wife and I are planning our mainline to run through the country and pass several large horse farms complete with horses, barns, and all the other goodies that go with it. If that doesn't make sense see our website and it will be clear. Russ
I guess that means I need to add a gun range, a lake with a guy fishing, someone camping by the lake, someone under his car working on it, gardening, etc.... I guess the point is that it's best to include scenes from real life? Mark in Utah
Sorry guys, I was thinking yesterday was the 23rd. But, it goes for a month. Please come back and vote anyway! I think it starts tonight? I will be more careful next time about setting the date! Thanks for the answers too. The horse farms sound beautiful, Russ. Slightly different atmosphere than where I live. The horses would be in the barn anyway if they were here! It was 9 this morning. And quite brisk all day. Even the Police horses are in the stables today! By the way.........HEH HEH HEH...........A horse walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender says, "Hey, why the long face"?
My inclusion of my hobby would be a no-brainer- a guy with a camera trackside. Since I model the 1970s, there would be no overzealous cops hassling this guy.
Do you reckon this guy would get a decent photo? (he might get hassled for how he's parked that truck though!)
I havent included a hobby on my layout but I have included part of my Profession into my layout. As I work on railroad signalling I built a level crossing and you can see a maintenance guy at the location. At the time I built the layout I was a signal maintainer. [ 24. Alas, my modeled era is early to mid steam, and I'm a computer geek by profession. Perhaps I'l just make a mad-scientist castle somewhere in the background, with my excuse being that he'll have access to advanced technology and thus will face the same issues I do
Hopefully my website link on my posts works but our http is www.barghorseranch.com you'll see where the bulk of our money goes, scale model horses would be much cheaper to feed. Russ
im going to include a rock band in my layout, and probably a railfan or 2. i also want to include some construction equipment because watching the machinery can be interesting.

Steve, I love watching construction equipment. If I had more room, I'd have every piece of scale equipment I own out working on roads, tearing down buildings, building buildings, and whatever else I can think of. Hey, it's just another scene in real life that we encounter everyday!
I voted yes to 'combining', but in different approaches. Because one of my other hobbies is woodworking, I've been making my own stripwood out of maple or pine stock. I also make experimental types of spline roadbed, just to test materials & construction techniques, rather than having a need for roadbed.I do use it, I just replace older method stuff every time I make a track revision. As a guitar player, I use the old strings and brass ferrules for various jobs.Am experimenting right now with tuning pegs as turnout throws. regards / Mike I do name all commercial establishments for relatives and friends, and try to tie them to what those folks actually do, or used to do.
