Hi folks. I suspect my flatbed scanner is in it's last days. I scanned a recent photo taken at the Brooklyn roundhouse in Portland, Or, and scanned/saved it at a little higher resolution than I normally do. The file is jpg, about 80k in size. In the original photo you can see the bolts around the smokebox fronts very clearly. Please give me some feedback on this shot. Thanks. [IMG]

I think it's inserting pixels where there aren't any, to compensate and "increase resolution".

What model is it, and how old? If it's older than a year it's probably not better than 600x600.

Also, do you have Photoshop LE or better,, or Paintshop Pro?

Alexander, it's a Mustek 1200 and is several years old. Probably time for a new one. I've worn a couple out. :(

I use an Epson 1250 PHOTO. about $160, 1200dpi, has a slide adapter that produces reasonable images.

It doesn't matter about your scanner Fitz, that is a really good scanned in photo. Better than some folks can produce using new digital cameras scanning straight into their computer. Why should you spend the money on a newer scanner to put an 80 KB picture on this site. Who needs to see the bolts around the smoke box. Your scanner is more than adequate for pictures here. Buy some new rolling stock with the money or give your wife a thrill and take her out for diner.

Nobody needs any better equipment than the lowest facilitator can accomodate who is visiting this site.

It is the interest developed by the picture that should matter here, not the quality, unless there is a photography competition going on and at 80 KB you are not going to get any breathtaking incredible detail unless the person really knows what they are doing.

Would you like an example off site?

Gary, maybe it's my eyesight that's going bad! Sure, send me an example, though I think we went through this once before. When I get the prints from last weekend's photo special I'll put the old Mustek to the test and we'll see what happens. Thanks to all for the feedback. [IMG]

Fitz, yes we did go through this once before, but I'll send you another example off site of scanned 35mm photos, closeup digital photography using a screw on closeup lens and straight outdoor digital shots using a screw on wide angle lens of a live steamer fan trip and transfered straight into my computer from the digital camera and you will see that my digital camera at zillions of pixels is doing no better than your scanner, scanning in your 35mm photos and reducing them down to 80 KB.

I would really like to see your photo specials and I'm sure most Trainboaders would also, if they are anything like your roundhouse steamer photos.

Don't bother reducing the size of any of your photos that you send to me, scanned or otherwise as my sever system can handle a photo at any woo woo woo with no problem.
