Anyone know where I can get a couple of good photos of this engine? I just bought a GEM C&O Hudson, and want to compare. Also what other Hudsons did this resemble, particularly Mid-Western roads?
Welcome to our family here on the TrainBoard Petey! The L-1 4-6-4 C&O engines No.490 to 494 (5) were built by C&O in 1946 & 1947, retired 1953 thru 1955. The C&O, (and Frisco), re-built Pacifics 4-6-2s into 4-6-4 Hudsons The L-2 4-6-4 C&O engines No.300 to 307 (8) were built by Baldwin 1941 & 1942, retired 1955. The L-2-A 4-6-4 C&O engines No.310 to 314 (5) were built by Baldwin 1948, retired 1955. The last and heaviest Hudsons (No.s 310-314 the Baldwins) in 1948 weighed 443.000 pounds. More data can be found in: "North American Hudsons", by Lloyd E. Stagner, published in 1987 by South Platt Prss, Box 163, David City, Nebraska 68632. I do not have any photos of C&O Hudsons. But perhaps this will help some.
"C&O Power" (Shuster, Huddleston, and Staufer) has pics and information on every C&O steamer just about. Also, "Old Dominion Steam" (Dixon) has some info. I thought that some of the C&O Hudsons resembled the NYC J3 hudsons, but the NYC versions are a bit smaller and lighter supposedly.
Welcome to Trainboard! Great Subject, one of my favorites. Go to my website, link in the address below, and find the Harold K. Vollrath photo page. Scroll way down below the New York Central sections and you'll find a C&O section with photos of two of the 300 class Hudsons. They didn't look at all like New York Central Hudsons as you will see when you look at the page. Actually, they didn't look like any other RR's Hudsons, they looked typically C&O. Thanks everybody for your responses. I looked up the pics on Fitz' site. When I get the loco I will compare to them. This eng. is painted & numbered, but no pic in eBay listing, so don't know what rd nr. Estimate receipt of eng. in about 15 days. I'm going to be presumptuous & say I've found some new friends, except for Watash who has been a font of knowledge in the recent past. As to Rigderunner, he is either crying, or stamping his feet for C&O steam. Hang in there, your wish might come true, if your interested in this GEM Hudson. My next question will be concerning CB&Q S3/C&S A3/FWD A31.
Ridgerunner, That blows it! It is by-chance an HO scale. I have been on the internet, tonight, and there are about 5 brass C&O engines, all HO. I could try to shrink by Hudson. What do you think? Denis
Hello. C&O Steam... C&O Diesels... C&O Rolling Stock... C&O anything. Best place to start is the C&O Histerical.. uhhhh Historical Society!!! I have been a member since '86. They do an EXCELLENT job and have data bases of about a bazillion picks. Plus, you can purchase all the C&O resource books such as C&O Power, C&O Diesel Guide, etc... etc. Good luck!!! Kitbash

Hey Fitz, You know of anyplace to get more pictures of the C&O's H-8 online??? I want to print out some pictures of it to put in my picture achive in the shop.... I've been doing alot of printing of online pictures, for my own use... And to have them for reference for modeling purposes...
Hey Guys Received the C&O Hudson (Gem). What a nice engine. Great and extensive detail. Manuf. as #305, previous owner changed all but smokebox plate to #300. Too big, I think for you, Ridgerunner, and as Watash says, scales out about 4.6 tons (engine alone weighs about 33 oz, actually). I am now waiting for receipt of a Westside Penn K-5.
