How easy ,or hard, is it to snap a moving freight train into? I have heard that misusing the thrrottle and brakes usually is the culprit. Copyright 2008 Jerry DeBene
there are alot of factors to keep in mind when doing it. length, how many tons and where and how it is placed, flatcars especially those stupid ttx single axle each end flats, also where is the rear end at is at uphill or downhill, this is a big reason why the push for dynamic brakes came about, also you wanna keep in mind the rear end sets up and releases far slower than the head end, if you are stretch braking and kick em off it is very easy to rip out a drawbar toward the rear end, unfortunately i know from experience. I have a friend who is a retired CSX engineer who had it happen to him twice in his railroading career. One of the times he said he put a dozen or so freight cars in a hollow(jumped the track) as a result of snapping a long train into. I just wonder how prevelent an incident this is?
