Timothy Morris's Rio Grande in Color Volume 5: Second Generation Diesels, is another great publication from Morning Sun Books. 128 pages covering the Grande years of 1960 to the "Hind End." It contains a Diesel roster from 1961 - 1990. Tons of beautiful photos, good descriptions, and a worthy compaion of the other Rio Grande in Color volumes. The book retails for $59.95, and is worth the price! Sveral of the photos show more than just the locomotives, giving you a better glimps into the past. Pages 122-123 inparticular show a very expanisve shot of Helper, the yard, and the single track engine house. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Rio Grande, especially the later years!
I have now gone through RGC Vol. 5 and the pictures are very good. Some of the captions have errors and are a bit "campy" for my taste, but overall I would suggest to anyone looking for another addition to their "Grande" library, that they should purchase this book. Contact me if you would like a copy for $42.00 plus shipping. Thanks.
I just obtained a copy of this book for $36 at a train show in Chantilly. I'd like to offer some initial comments having had a chance to look through the book for a bit. The book basically starts with the Kraus Maffai diesels in 1961 and then catalogs the GP30's, GP35's, GP40's, SD45's etc in order that the Rio Grande obtained them and has some nice close shots, and some shots of them leading freight trains. If you are a modeler or a fan of the Rio Grande during the 1960's thru 1980's, then IMO, this is an excellent resource and must have book. It is true much of this information is covered in other books previously published in one form or another such as Rio Grande Diesels Volume 2 or other works. However, there are many new photo's of these diesels along with a few additional bits of information. The only part of the book which I found to be the most redundant is the last section on the Rio Grande Zephyr. That part is basically a rehash of books like Zephyrs thru the Rockies and other treatments of this well covered train. With this book, I now have Rio Grande in Color Vol's 1, 2, 3 and 5. I purposefully skipped vol 4 because it covers steam and early diesel, which is before my modeling era of interest AND that time period is also covered quite well in Volume 3.
