I hear some people say that all their rolling stock has bodymount couplers.
I think we all now that is the best, but I never saw a how-to on this.
I would like to convert my rolling stock to bodymount with N-scale couplers.
    Question:
Can I use the Microtrain trucks and couplers I use now (maybe cut of the coupler with a Dremel and use the trucks and separated couplers ) ?
How does one install bodymount couplers on a tank car, ACF two bay centerflow etc.... ? (you can't drill holes in the air )
What I ask if the people that say all their rolling stock is bodymount , can you give us ordinary people an how-to in this ?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Actually Paul I use both body mounted and truck couplers. I really have no real preference and find truck mounted couplers can be an advantage when running on tighter curves.

All my tank cars and centreflow hoppers use truck mounted couplers and they operate fine.

I don't think you could cut the coupler box's from the trucks then try and body mount them. you would need to purchase body mounted couplers- 1025 0r 1027 packs.

You can also but a mounting kit from MT that provides the rights drills and tap for body mounting.

I guess these days I'm a littlelazy and when it comes to adding couplers I usually go straight for truck mounted couplers.

For hopper cars and tank cars several companies make adapters to allow the body mount conversion to take place. Micro trains cars are easy as they always leave a mounting location with a pre drilled hole or dimple to locate your tap & drill. Use a 0090 screw to mount a 1025/1023 micro trains coupler to the body. The stock coupler can be cut off the trucks. Somtimes it helps with clearence issues to replace the wheels with low profile. Micro trains makes several tools to help with body mounting. I would recomend the tap & drill set, the coupler assembly jig, and the coupler height guage.

I run all body mounts. Have had no troubles. Seems like most new diesels coming out, have the body mounted coupler. So doing the cars is a natural follow along.

If I recall correctly, Precision Masters had an adaptor for hoppers. For a part number, I'd need to dig through my stuff, and find some if any are left. Now that Red Caboose acquired PM, has this accessory been discontinued?

Looks like Brian has covered the subject quite well.

    Thanks for the answers.
As soon as the rest of my track is down I'll try to change some rolling stock.
