We're planning a June trip to the black hills. Of course, I'm having us ride this: 1880 Train - Welcome to the Black Hills Central Railroad in beautiful South Dakota Anyone been on that one?
I've moved this one out of the Cattle Car as there is nothing off-topic about this question... I have not yet been to this but I am sure looking forward to getting a trip report when you get back with all the photos included!!!!!!! :tb-cool: :tb-cool: :tb-cool: :tb-cool:
I took my family to the South Hills a couple of years ago, and we road that train. We had a lot of fun and was worth the money and time. The scenery is very good, was fun for the kids to ride behind a steam loco. I would do it again next time we are in the area. We rode from Hill City to keystone. Hill City was fun Keystone was as touristy as could be but the ride was a hoot, one point is a 6% grade.
As we passed by the area last summer I convinced the wife to let me see if I could get some tickets. Unfortunately for me they were all sold out for the day. (Make sure to get your tickets early.) I did hang around long enough to see the steam engine depart. Here is a picture that I took as we were looking around. Ben
I was there last summer.......it's a nice little ride. First run each day is a GP9....I made sure we got on the train pulled by the 2-6-6-2T later in the day. I'd suggest doing reservations, or at least stopping in for tickets the day before. I saw people not get on that were walk-ups. Not super cheap, but where else can you ride behind a Mallet!
Still have my ticket stubs from a family outing when I was about 10. Many years ago. I totally loved it!!
Funny, the site doesn't mention a GP9.. good to know. Looks like I'll be getting tickets before hand.
When we stopped by around 10:30 a.m. the GP9 was just sitting in the yard. I guess they must use it on an "as needed" basis. Ben
