I am watching s documentary about a CSX train derailment that started a fire in a tunnel beneath downtown Baltimore. Looks like it went on for a few days. Downtown baltimore was closed down completely.

I don't remember this, although it must have been national (USA) news. Seems it caused a lot of re-routes for train traffic.

Is the tunnel still in use? When did it happen? Has the FRA changed any procedures because of this fire? What a great terrorist stunt! [IMG]

I remember hearing about this. It was big news. It was about three years ago. I saw this show a few weeks ago.

I've never heard the results of an investigation. Something caused the train to derail. And there was a leaking city water main right above the tunnel. The city blames the RR. The RR blames the city. Outcome????

Not sure. It lasted about four days. Hydrochloric acid tank car on fire in the tunnel set ablaze several boxcars loaded with plywood and lumber. I saw the boxcars that they could pull out and they were completely black and smoke still pouring out of the doors. Original temp 1500 degrees F. After the first day was 500 degrees F. The rails buckled so bad that the cars had to be dragged a long way before re-railing.

Seems that sutting downtown Baltimore down for four days would be a massive economic blow.
