This was painted up real quick and not glued in place, did it just to see how the size looks. Later I will paint the rails a lighter rustier color. Z scale code 40 rail on PC ties with Roberts excellent laser ties in-between Ballast is Smith & Sons from Scenic Express, called Penn-Ohio #50, and fine cinders. I assume the #50 refers to the screen size, but cannot find any standard for screen. It seems different depending on what wire you use. I like the color, but still looks a little bit big, what do you guys think: Here is some N scale ballast to compare with: The cinders look a bit smaller: How is Highball Product ballast? is it finer than this? The ties are spaced to match MT flex to give you a reference point.
Dang, that stuff looks good! Your work looks equally nice! I have a bag of Highball ballast, but haven't used it yet.
Chris, nice track work. In looking at your pictures I notice that you are not the usual type of couplers, so what are you going to use.
Here is a couple shots of Arizona Rock & Gravel N Scale Copper Range Green ballast on Peco Z Scale Flextrack painted Floquil Roof Brown for comparison. It would be cool if we could get everyone to post photo's of their ballast so we can build up a library of different ballast brands, colors, and methods that we can use to help decide which we want to use.
Chris, looks great, it looks like you have a prototypical joinner. Did you make that yourself? Really looks convincing!
Joe, The joint bars are from Alkem: http://www.geocities.com/bkempins/AlkemScaleModelsImages/NLinesideDetailsRaw.jpg The link-n-pin coupler is just a dummy for the photo. There is a Z scale 903 on the other end of that car: http://www.railimages.com/albums/chrisschmuck/adg.jpg That Arizona ballast looks smaller than mine, but I'm in love with my color. Does Arizona have color samples to see up online? Is Highball ballast smaller?
Not the greatest photo's, but I found this: http://www.rrscenery.com/azrock3HO.html and just sent them a E-mail. I thought they were out of business.

Like this? I'll try to explain! [1] Go to your gallery and putt your mouse cursor on the picture [2] Then press the right mouse button [3] Select properties Then you see some information about the picture. Look at "Adres(URL)" - You see the link of the picture: "http://www.railimages.com/albums/donavila/aaa.sized.jpg" [4] Select and copy this link. You do this by moving your cursor to the front of the link, press the left mousebutton and move to the end of the link. [5] Then press the CTRL and C keys (copy) and the link is copied. [6] Go to trainboard and post a reply, chose for the full reply forum, on the bottom you see a "IMAGE" button [7] Press the "IMAGE" button and the forum will ask for the link of the picture [8] Now press the CTRL and V keys. (past) Chose ok and the forum made a link of the picture for you! Now you will see it in all it's glory like I did above
Hi Rob, Nice ballast! I see you are experimenting with the Lenz Gold Mini and Power 1 module! It really makes your locomotives run well don't it! -Robert
I E-mailed Arizona to order some NP and PRR ballast, they said they were out of both of those colors until next month. The #50 looks smaller in Don's photo, maybe I'm just getting to much of a close-up on mine.
Thanks. Got it. Essentially I did what you suggested the first time, but I missed the IMAGE button, so instead of a photo I got the link. ..."Next time" ...don
Ok, here is a closeup of my track. It is marklin, and I used woodlan scenes fine cinders. Before ballast I painted the track with grimey black. Also notice the track by the grain elevator, I tried to create a look of abandoned track barely visiable to go with the old elevator, so I cut into the base and shoved the rails into it to crete the sunken down look. It was fun!
I call ARIZONA ROCK AND MINERAL CO. and ordered his last two bags of Copper Range Green Granite. I really like how it looks in Mr. Rays photos. The guy said the N scale stuff was a pain in his but and basically made from left over HO stuff. He sounded like he wanted out of the scenery business....It also sounds like he goes out in the back yard, grabs a handfull, grinds it, and screens it. You gotta love Z Scale!
