Hi Everyone, May 20th, 01, 14:50 Hrs MDT. I was looking at a European Model Train Site and Noticed that F/FP 45s may put on the Market perhaps in the Fall or so. Put out by Model Power I wish it B either L.L. or Atlas Really. I Must say I don't know to Much about the F/FP 45s But I do Know that Great Northern Had some in the Sky Blue Colours b 4 the Merger in 69. If its Not Asking to Much What Ever Happened to these Units. I know they were Painted into B.N. Colours but I don't know if they all went into Freight Service when Amtrack was formed in 71. I liked the Units a Lot but Lost Track of When or How Long they Lasted. I'd like to Consider them into My B.N. Fleet If I could get some Imformation on them Thanks Everyone. OhYes. Have a Great Week Railfaning as Well those B.N. Lines. Can B reached at - grandtrunkent@hotmail.com Andrew, Calgary.
I remembered that at the BN Photo Archives, Charles has alot of info on most of the units... Looks like they dissapeared in the mid 80s... i liked these units looks too. http://nietzsche.mit.edu/~auro/trains/photos/biel/BN/EMDORIG/F45/INDEX.HTM
IIRC, Athearn came out with the F45/FP45s in several paint schemes. I know they're in Santa Fe blue/yellow and the so-called Kodachrome scheme (which I call Tyco-like), but don't know if they're in BN or not. Several of these beasts went to Wisconsin Central, one went to Utah Railway, and (alas) quite a few went to scrap in Boise, Idaho I've only seen one or two in the green & black, but I thought they looked pretty good. Anyway, check out Athearn's website at Athearn Hope this helps.
Hi Everyone, May 20th, 01 20:55 Hrs, MDT. It would B Really Nice if We Could get Pictures Posted of these Units in G.N. or B.N. posted on this Site. Better Still What about Other B.N. Units. I admit I see a lot of Picture posted on the U.P., C.P., and the C.N. Boards. Hey Guys lets Post on this Board as well. OK. Thanks Everyone, Andrew, Calgary.
I guess i could snag some off various sites but i doubt the owners would appreciate that I wasn't old enough to think about taking pictures of the BN F45s when they were around either so i don't have any pics of my own of them... lol
Hey All, Only two railroads yes 2 had these style of 45s the ATSF and GN. The GN units or a few of them are roaming around New York on the Susquahanna and Montana on the MRL. A few have indeed made it to Utah, and if I'm thinking right they have been returned to MRL. I can get you information on the GN Units, just E-mail me or post your specific request on here. I don't know to much about the ATSF ones but will do what I can with those. By the way, who would have thought when these units were running around that they would belong to the same railroad one day
The F45 was rostered only by GN, BN, and ATSF. GN bought 14 units, and sucessor BN received 32, all built for freight duty. ATSF ordered 40 F45's. The FP45 (which was about 5 feet longer), was only owned by ATSF (9 units) and Milwaukee Road (5 units), and all were bought for passenger service. All of the GN/BN F45's were retired by the mid-80s as their leases expired. All but 5 of the GN/BN units were scrapped, the survivors going on to eventually work for Montana Rail Link and Susquehanna(NYSW). BN 6627 went on to become MRL 391, BN 6635 became MRL 393, BN 6642 became MRL 392, BN 6644 became MRL 390, and BN 6640 became NYSW 3636. The other current operators of F45's are Utah Railway and Wisconsin Central (ex-ATSF units). [ 21 May 2001: Message edited by: Mankind ]
