Since it's finished and I can't post on the atlas thread, I'll post here and go over the whole thing.

Started with an Atlas mogul. This is what you see under the hood (stock atlas at this piont)

I started making a boiler out of brass tubes.

A little further down the line. At this point I took the motor out and will put a new motor in the tender.

Now with the tender sides made.

At first I put a flywheel in the cab.

Later when I got the motor installed I tested it out. Going backwards up a 4% grade and around a 9.75" curve the drive shaft would bind slightly. So I took the flywheel out to let the shaft be longer.

All dressed up and no place to go?

Naaa, we'll head for the woods!

    Wow! Really nice work! [IMG]

Now, why would making the drive shaft longer (by taking out the fly wheel) keep it from binding? Looks like you have a universal joint there. Why notuse a direct drive? Thanks.

    Very, very nice engineering.

I breezed through it above. When I posted to the Atlas forum I went into detail and posted as I went. If anyone who didn't see it at atlas or just someone who wants to know more....feel free to ask questions.

Domes are cast from an old Rapido 0-6-0 that Randy (randgust) let me borrow.

Tender is scratchbuilt and uses Kato caboose trucks to pick up power. Replace sideframes with MDC archbars (also added leafsprings)

I never did get the LED headlight done (long story) MV lens will fix that.

Motor is from the motorman. Its got a 4:1 gearhead on the front of it. The stock drivetrane is 28:1, so final reduction is 112:1

I don't have a stopwatch, but I figure the top speed to be 20smph!!! yes it creeps.

I kinda got lucky that the chassis worked out so good, but now that it's done and runs soooooo smooth, I'm very happy with it and it is now my favorite locomotive. (might even beat out the shays when they get here)

Scale drawing are in the Oct 87 MR

    Chris;

That is a truly stunning model you created. Is the motor you used one of the coreless types?

    Cheers, Lenny

    Sapacif,

With the longer drive shaft the angle isn't as great at the universals. With the flywheel everything worked great in all but one situation. So I yanked it out. Wasn't that effective anyways due to the motor. Motor spins @ 13000rpms, but the shaft after the gearhead spins @ 3250rpms. The flywheel would work better at the back of the motor, but I didn't have room for it and the motor wasn't a double shaft.

Direct drive? Do you mean why not keep the motor in the cab? It would stick out way to far, even the stock one would. I wanted a gearhead motor.

Looks great. I like the smokestack you put on the finished model.

So how soon will these be available in quantity and multiple road names? ;)

    Lenny,

I'm not exactly sure if it is coreless or not.

What I do know, its a Swiss made Mirco-Mo 10x16mm motor with samarium cobalt magnets. (Whatever that means) The motorman told me that some of his motor have 7 poles and gold & silver parts, but I don't know if that is the one I bought.

He recently told me he can now get 8x16 and 6x15mm motors with or without gearheads.

So you could repower just about anything in N scale.

I have tried at least eight times to get this topic to come up.. Everything works fine until it gets to the pictures! It keeps saying "(8 items remaining) Downloading picture" then the the RailImages URL. But, it ain't downloading anything.. It's dead as a doornail - repeatedly.

EDIT: Sure enough, I left it alone for 5 minutes and looked at other topics, came back, and it worked!

    Fantastic job, Chris!!!

Gregg: Coming up fine for me, consistently. Trying flushing your browser's cache. One bad cache file can really trip things up. [IMG]

    Gregg,

It might just be the size of the photos. I like nice close ups with lots of detail, but I resize everything for railimages to around 100k each.

With all the photos posted at once it might take a min. Sorry.

Chris, I have to say you are in a species completely different than mine. What an amazing job. I feel accomplished when I can disassemble a loco, fix it and put it back together. Manufacture is beyond me at this point. Beautiful model.

BTW, since it looks like the only part of the mogul you used was the frame, can you buy just that part from Atlas rather than the whole piece?

    Jacob,

    Thanks
Manufacture is all you can do when they don't make what you want off the shelf. I'd be more than happy to not have to scratchbuild it.

I don't know if Atlas will sell the parts or not. Basically I paid $90 bucks for the
    frame
    drivers
    cylinder
    pilot
    bell
    and tender tool boxes.

All the rest on it went to the parts box. I sure hope the parts will become available because I would like to maybe make a few other locomotives.

Thats the thing about something like this. Makes you want to change eras now that I know I can just make the motive power.

    All together:
    Atlas 2-6-0 $90
    motor $50
    tendertrucks $6
    etched parts $14
    detail & misc $30-40

Worth every penny as it makes a lap on the layout.

Outstanding job. Chris keeps me honest, and probably pushes me up a notch higher, when I'm working on my own projects. About the time I think, naaah..... it won't show, or naaahhh, it can't be done..... There's Chris doing it. Back to the workbench I go.....

One of the real 'shames' of the Atlas shutdown is that they OUGHT to be watching projects like this very closely, because if they can make an SD26 from an SD24 and not hesitate, they ought to look at doing a light 2-6-2 like this from the 2-6-0. No, it's not their tooling (Micro-Ace) but it STILL could be done. That's a SWEET looking engine, unlike anything ever done in N to my knowledge, and the addition of the micro-motor and gearhead is equally leading-edge.

    Salute!!!!!

By direct drive I meant to put the worm gear directly on the motor shaft. Maybe that isn't the correct term. But, I see now that that would not be possible. The universal has to be in the drive train. Thanks.

Man - and I was proud of myself for adding (gasp!) sun shades!!! [IMG] Chris, you take the concept of modeling to a new level! Thanks for showing us what CAN be done! [IMG] [IMG]

Chris333's model is of a very common "logging Prairie" that was offered in the Baldwin Locomotive Works catalog. There were so many that there is one not ten miles from my house today! This would make an excellent offering by an N scale manufacturer.

    StJL&ECo.. No.. 11:
