Just received this engine a few days ago. It was listed as a SD75M but on checking the CN roster it is actually a SD75i. Like the paintwork and details but not the running, lacks power. Cheers,
Cliff: Very nice photo. "Like the paintwork and details but not the running, lacks power" Sounds like a steam loco. Stay cool and run steam....
The more I read about these the less I am all gung ho to shell out the greenbacks for one. I think maybe I will stick with Kato SD70's and bypass these until there is a stronger showing from Athearn.
The Athearn SD70/75's I have tested have performed similar in all aspects (power/smoothness/quiet) to the later release Atlas SD60M's and the Intermountain Tunnel Motors. If the Kato's are graded "A", then these are a "B" to "B-". Yes they are not quite as nice as the Kato SD70M's, but the models and roads offered by Athearn (other than NS) are not available from Kato. If you model modern era, the only alternative for now is brass for these particular models. Hopefully Athearn will work to improve their future releases.
I hAVE 3 and all run fine. Good pulling power and no hesitation. In fact they run better than both my IM tunnel motors and most of my Atlas locos. Jeff
Yes, I'm holding out for Kato. I just hope they do an ATSF SD75 before they build the 70ACe because I think that one will keep 'em busy for a while. The Athearn unit will fall into the "If I can get one for $30" bucket, along with the Bachmann Dash 8 and LL/Walthers units until they convert to DCC-ready.
