I had to go really thick with the yellow paint on the sides to hide the horizontal striations in the FUD, so everything is a bit goopy looking. That, and I'm not the greatest painter in the world. I didn't use as much paint on the grey sections or the trucks, so they're still a bit fuzzy/fluffy looking. Overall though, I think it passes the "three foot" test Cheers, -Mark
Let's do a new rule and call it "The Six Foot Rule". I'm sure that most striated FUD prints will pass that test. Which means that they'd then become okay! Yay!! Or, in my case, I could just look at 'em without using either my bifocals or my Optivisors. That'd work too without creating a new rule. Did anybody take HuskerN's advice and buff their prints with a new tootbrush and toothpaste?? If so, did it make a difference? I'd like to know, 'cause I think it's important, 'specially if it makes a big difference in the surface quality. Just sayin'.... Cheerio! Bob Gilmore
I used Bestine and a toothbrush on mine. I didn't think to use toothpaste, although I can see where that might help to get rid of some of the fuzziness (particularly on the trucks). I'll have to give it a try when the pre-rebuilds come out Cheers, -Mark
well mark, we're all waiting to see the complete train in action, now that you have the water bottles! ;D
Gettin' there. I just need to finish adding the topside handrails and then swing by Ye Olde LHS for some couplers - at which point Kato will no doubt announce their own excursion train Cheers, -Mark
River_Eagle- Next question: Where is your model of UPP 9336 ( http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=1073 ) from?
Whoops, my mistake. Apparently I added something to the MM engine gray to lighten it up (and then promptly forgot about it). I just bought a fresh bottle and as it turns out it is nowhere near UP gray. Sorry about that. -Mark
Looking for photo reference material for the pre-rebuilts I cam across this... http://www.flickr.com/photos/fastalk/6894747322/in/photostream/ Is it real? How many tenders do the heritage fleet have? - James
this is what I have http://s46.photobucket.com/user/river_eagle/embed/slideshow/UP-844 I also have the turbine book, and there might be an engineering drawing or two in there
I don't know for sure how many they have, but they have run 3985 with twin water bottles: Doubleheaders in theory could run with twins apiece, but my photos only have evidence of 844 running with standard tender and 3985 with 1 water bottle: It certainly depends of the duration of the run. Long distance: 3985 is thirsty, and proper water is hard to come by for the steam crew. Short distance: Doubleheaders or single engines use only the standard tender or 1 water bottle.
The same double headed trip I posted earlier, there's a better photo of the water bottle arrangement (short duration trip): http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=113464&nseq=2 Long distance 844 single headed trip with twin bottles: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=417935&nseq=143 Tons of evidence of single bottles, some twin bottles, but nothing of doubleheaded 844/3985 and twins apiece.
Cracking photos Guys! What I am after is a end shots of the per-rebuilds showing the pipe detail, in particular the other end to this. I just can't get a photo showing me what's going on. Most shots focus on the loco, or when it was with a turbine, the front! -James
Sorry for little derail here but glory... look at em steamers all shiny and sparkling! Whoever in charge of cleaning em up did a heck of a job!
Nice one Mark, I can now add the detail to the other end. Soon be ready for some screen shots! -James
