Hi all. This is my first time stepping out of the N scale forum and I am doing it to help my neighbor with his HO scale problem. He has a pair of Athearn blue box SD40-2s and they sound HORRIBLE on the tracks. The gears in the trucks have been replaced, but the little transition flex piece that fits between the driveshaft and the flywheels are worn out and I think this is what the problem is. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can find a few replacements? I called Athearn and the guy kinda chuckled and said he didn't think he had seen any of those parts in a while and while he was more than helpful in trying to help me track down replacements, the leads were all dead ends. PLEASE HELP ME FIND THESE PARTS!!!

check your local hobby shop. I know most hobby shops I've been to have a case that athearn sent out that had bluebox replacement parts.

BS on them not having those parts though, they still use the same drivetrain setup on the new RTR's.

Really? I thought they went to the new hex drive like Kato is using? I was at Caboose Hobbies in Denver (the closest one to me that's worth a damn) and they didn't have any either. I will have to keep looking. If your LHS has any parts would you be willing to pick them up for me? I will gladly send some cash for the parts and shipping.

Sierra117 -- I think you're describing either the spline or the ball coupling that it snaps onto. Check out A-Line parts 116-12030 or 116-12031. If it's just the ball coupling, check out A-Line 116-12054. Hope this helps. Good luck!
