It's a total-foamboard base with multi levels to avoid that flat look (ick!!) Hopefully pinning track in place within the next week or so.
Well that should get you running trains! Reminds me of my first layout, back when I thought my first one would be my only one. You will learn a lot from this layout: What you like. What you don't like. What you will different the next time. Enjoy this proccess and the feelings of accomplishment that come with it. You're off to a great start.
Nice going Mike. I believe those engines will pull 6 cars up your 4% grade. Keep us posted with pictures.
the max incline is a 3 % (outer up and over + the up and over on the opposite side), the rest are 2%'s... so hoping for a few more cars than 6
