Thanks for the kind words every one. It was a lot of hard work by every one, the club has a good plan and is progressing steadily. My small part was in the cab, most common question, "What are the squares and numbers for?" for adults, (They are the ultra sound readings for thickness) and "Can I ring the bell now?" for the kids. A quick reminder, if any one is coming through ABQ, we have the site open on Wednesday and Saturday for work, visitors are welcome. Regards, Kevin
I've noted some organizations which do quite well. And then a few who stand above, head and shoulders, the crowd. Yours is one. I would wonder if you could raise a few dollars as consultants to others who'd be looking at conducting similar efforts?
Kevin, any idea when the online store will re-open? I went to the main site to order some memorabilia from you and found the announcement that it will return soon. Alternate plan: If I send you the $$$ can you purchase the items for me and send them? :tb-biggrin:
Sorry all about the delay, October and November are moderately insane for me. Oct has the open house and the ABIF. http://www.balloonfiesta.com/ I crew for a German team every year and then prepare for November. In November I write most of a novel each year it is a world wide challenge to write 50K words in thirty days.... This year is a sequel and all of October was prep work for the writing this month. (Progress.. 6days 12079 words...) Regardless I have missed a few updates, so here they are. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/10-8-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/10-15-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/10-22-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/10-29-11/index.html Thanks for all the good wishes, Kevin
Thanks again, Kevin. It looks like the real serious stuff is happening now. I love that "cathedral" shot. Sure would like to be there to help on this great restoration. :tb-biggrin:
Is the lantern collection just Santa Fe? Or from many railroads? Looks like quite a nice accumulation!
My word count is at 25468, and a pause for more photos.... http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/11-5-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/11-12-11/index.html Have fun, Kevin
Kevin, more thanks for keeping us up to date with 2926 progress. I assume the word count is for your annual novel? Good luck this year. :tb-biggrin:
As far as I know the lock box is just to keep the Connex locks dry and un corroded. As for the word count thing, my wife and I always write a novel in November, on the challenge site, I am also listed as Gunns. (It is short for Gunnersson grin) the site is, http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/gunns if you want to track my progress. This year all the rail road puns will be in the last third.... and the huge yellow star ships of "Uncle Tim" (United Transport) will return. I am going to launch a raid from the train, err ship.... Grin Regards, Kevin
The latest set of photos. http://nmslrhs.org/images/photos/11-19-11/index.html And http://nmslrhs.org/images/photos/12-3-11/index.html Four days now with temps in the single digits.... In othe news I made 50K plus on the novel, but am as of yet about half done. Regards, Kevin
Here are the latest sets of photos. Page nine 2012 is up but nothing is posted there yet. On to the last photos of last year. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/12-10-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/12-17-11/index.html http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/12-28-11/index.html Sorry for the delay, holiday travel time is always a zoo in the FAA it really keeps us techs hopping. Have fun, Kevin
Hope everything on schedule? Sure seems like it from the reports. What are group goals for the new year?
That's some great detailed work you folks are doing. Tell us more about the driver counterweight patch. :tb-biggrin:
OK a disclaimer.... I don't get to the site much since I ended up on an "All Mid shift" schedule. However as I understand it the last thing we are going to do is the flues. Purportedly we get a year from the first flue installation before the flue time starts counting down. So we want to put of the next major tear down as long as possible. This means that all other work is to be completed first. The big thing (I think) will be the reinstallation of the side rods and pistons. The driver counter weight patch is the result of the standard balance process of the Santa Fe shops. The opened the counterweight and added or subtracted lead to get the correct weight. Some of the welds have cracked over the years, and the patch work is to repair those welds. We also wanted to check that the lead had not deteriorated. Regards, Kevin
Thanks, Kevin. It sure looks like 2926 will be "brand new" when you folks get through with her. :tb-biggrin:
I'd heard and read only a tiny amount about this procedure over the years. Could you or any compatriots outline how they, (AT&SF), would have accomplished this process?
As I understand it, they had a machine that the wheel set would be placed on. The correct amount of weight (to simulate the thrust and weight of the side rods and valve gear) would be placed on each crank pin, the driver set would be spun up to track speed, the measurements made and (after stopping grin) the proper amount of lead was packed in to the space provided in the driver center. The drivers are manufactured to be close to balance, with only minor adjustments needed. Another interesting thing about our locomotive is that the driver sets are counter balanced for forces from the other side of the set, which is what the smaller lobes on the drivers are. The offside balance weight is labeled 9:00 and a smaller weight labeld 3:00 in this picture. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/1-9-12/slides/P1071149.html Regards, Kevin
