Excellent choice for the new year...the future (E's) arriving to replace the past (water crane). Roger, what was beyond the depot that required such a massive complex of signals, both near and far?
A great era, Roger. Love the hats all the men are wearing. Have you lived in Anderson for your entire life?
This was the KY interlocking. You are looking west and the track next to the depot is the B-line main. The track to the left of the water plug is the Mich. Br. main. The 6 head signal in the back ground is the east bound home signal for the interlocking. The reason for all of the lights is these signals had to give all of the indications . At that time we did not cross over to the B-line within the interlocking but by 2 hand thrown crossovers outside of the interlocking. Today the Mich. Br. and the yard tracks are gone. The Mich. trains today use the B-line within the interlocking to head north to Elkhart. The depot and part of the freight house are all that is left and the B-line comes by at 30 mph and the Mich. at 15 mph. LEW
And here is Part 2. (Thanks to LEW for the answers to the many questions we all had.) Bret Hodge Photos.
Lew, thanks for the detailed description. I assume you were very familiar with that interlocking. Roger, thanks for the follow-up photo. Those three guys in hats obviously had no place to go and were in no hurry to get there...LOL
If I had a dollar for every time I passed this point on yard and freight , (what can I say) , I'll buy . LEW
