    Guys,
I found something on a Western Maryland SD-40, that I'd like to know just what it is and what its for! Heres a picture of it...

Ok Dirrectly behind the cab on this picture you'll find a small box that also helped to alter the hand railing I know what this is! Its an experiment the Western Maryland did that wasn't worthy of doing a well job at what it was intended for. Its an flange oiler. For ease on curves and such and wear on rail and wheels, with sanding on grades the oily wheels and rail did not gain any traction. So That much of this is taken care of! My question is the thing at the top, right above the flange oiler. It looks to be a vent shield of some type but then again I'm not sure what it is! Just exactly what was this? I want to model this and would like to know what i'm modeling and if its a shield or what. Can anyone help me on what exactly that would be and whats its for? As always TIA....

Maybe it is a roof for the crew for when they want to get a breathe of fresh air or a smoke, so that they don't get rained on. :D

It protects the air intake from snow and ice in the winter.

As for modeling it, Detail West or Associates has it as a part. I don't remember who or what they call it (smoke shield or something wierd like that) but I can look it up when I get home.

That item is a snow shield and many railroads up here in Canada have them on their units.
CP has them on their GP38's (Not on the dash 2's though) and on some GP35's.
CN has them on some of their SD40/SD40-2's as well as the 4 SD38-2's which the aquired from the Northern Alberta Railway.
Ontario Northland has them on their SD40-2's and GP38-2's.
Algoma Central's (Later Wisconson Central, Now CN) SD40's/SD40-2's and (someone correct me if I'm wrong) had them, as did Quebec North Shore and Labrador's SD40's/SD40-2's (some of which have been sold to other railroads).
    Happy Modeling.
    Cheers.

Thanks guys! So it comes down to a plain ole shield? Thats good.. I'm going to scratch build my own from sheet styrene so...

However I did notice that to be the only Western Maryland diesel (SD-40) to have it! But the flange oiler was on a few other WM diesels of the SD-35 type and the SD-40.

A detail such as that shield, shouldn't be extremely hard to make! 3 pieces of styrene cut to its shape of the roof of the cab and glued on and then painted! :D A small 3 hour project! If it takes me 3 hours to make it! HE HE HE

Here's a pic of Lil Ugly. She is a GP40 with a comfort cab and snow sheilds. It takes longer measuring and cutting and getting the right angles than installing them.

    Catt,
maybe so. I just like the "pick-my-brain" type work... Keeps me in good pratice....And in great skills... :D But all that to the side, I have scrape plastic to work with so. Use some of it and all to make the scrape pile smaller. And also saves the money to actually buy one when I have the materials to make my own...So i'm being conservative... :D and also recycling all at once! HE HE HE

John are you insinuating that I actually bought the plastic to make my snowshields? After 20+ years in this hobby I seldom need to buy plastic for any little projects like this.

I'm pretty sure the Alaska RR GP49s also have the same, or at least identical, shields. Yep, I found a great picture of an ARR GP49 with the snow shield, in addition to every other cold weather option that EMD offered! I believe that the GP49s are the only four-axle diesels that ARR hung onto after the SD70MACs showed up, except for a few MP15s.

    Catt,
You said it was easier to install then to make so... Quote "It takes longer measuring and cutting and getting the right angles than installing them." unquote. So I just took as if you may have bought the detailed part.... :D I hardly ever by any detail parts as long as I can manufacture it myself..... So I save money and all in the scratchbuilding the part needed and also I recycle any and all types of plastic even the hard clear bubble packs.. I use it for all types of things.. I have made an interesting part out of bubble pack plastic that was once clear and now its flat black....I manufactured some of my own "Elephant Ears" for a B&O 2-8-2 that not one detail part would fit properly! So I made my own to fit! And they look just as if they were factory ones and all but made to fit the loco they are now part of.... :D I'll see if I can get some good pictures online of my B&O 2-8-2, Q-4 :D

Something to watch when scratchbuilding one of these.....
The shield on the opposite side to your photo's (assuming it has one) will have a "lump" in it to clear the rear cab door opening, if the shield was exactly the same you would not be able to open the rear cab door.
I do have pics that I think will show this, but not on the net at the mo. I'll see if I can dig them out & scan.

    All the best :D

    Catt,
If you can try to get a picture of the opposite side or if Marty can either one will do.. So I can atleast model it prototypically.... :D THANKS!

I'm sure I have a pic of a loco that shows these, I just need to get it scanned and I will post it. Basically the hood is the same size & shape, just with a lump in it for the top of the cab door to swing into.

I'll scan it over the weekend [IMG] honest!

    All the best

    Okay, Brainwave......

Here's a pic on George Elwoods wonderful site of a canadian leaser that has one of these, the "lump" is clearly visible on the shield.
    George Elwoods Fallen Flags site

That should get you your answer quicker than me scanning & uploading [IMG]
