I'm reading Beebe & Clegg's The Trains We Rode, Vol. II and learned about the Ames Monument, a 60 FT tall pink granite monument built in the early 1880s and located near Sherman Hill, WY. It was dedicated to brothers Oakes and Oliver Ames who manufactured tools and earth moving equipment for the Union Pacific as it worked west on the original transcontinental railroad. The Ames shovel was highly regarded for its design and durability.

When built, the monument was located adjacent to the railroad at 8250 FT above sea level, the highest elevation on the line. Line relocations have since left the monument in a lonely spot about five miles north of today's UP main.

Our garden rakes are Ames, continuing their legacy in our modern era.
