American Models has opened up an offer to produce full length Budd passenger cars. Anyone interested in getting in on the ground floor on this venture?

Greg, I read somewhere that these cars would be to short compared to the real models? Is this true?

    Paul,

American Models has a set of Budd cars already in the middle of production. These are 8' scale feet shorter to accommodate the hi-rail operators. What AM is doing is a second set of Budd cars specifically for the California Zephyr which will be full scale length. As of this morning I understand that we have 22 committed people willing to front $600.00 with $100.00 down and we need 100. With SHS's F3's coming out soon and SHS's planning on an E7, this could be really big.
If you have any more questions just ask.

That's a lot of money. I'm busy in HO and G scale electric and live steam, so most of my funds are directed that way.

I just want to build a small switching layout in S scale (about 20' to 25' long).

Now I'm looking into the trackwork. I suppose that the Shinohara code 100 flexible track will be fine but I do not know what switches to use. the #5 or #6???

Well Paul, it really isn't that bad a price when you consider what you are going to get.

Choice of 2 sets (one of each car) or a deluxe 10 car set.

    Deluxe set:
    1. Baggage/ RPO
    1 Diner
    3. Sleeper
    4 Coach dome
    1 Observation Dome
This works out quite well to the actual California Zephyr consists. While it seems expensive it works out to $60 a car. On the other hand I haven't heard what the new short cars are going to work out price wise.

As to switches, I am leaning towards #6's on the main and #5's in the industrial and yard area's. Bill's Train Shop has switch kits that are fairly easy to spike down and competitive in price. Your layout idea sounds interesting, be sure to keep us posted.

Greg, the shop i spoke with said that there is no #5 switches available from Shinohara only from #6. Is this true?

Paul, that maybe true. That might be the reason that I started looking into the kits. You have me wondering now, I'll have to ask around and see what I find.
