If I freelance a branch, (because I don't know how the setting looked for my time era), but used a real railroad, would it fall under the free lance category or not? I'm modeling the Norfolk and Western branch line, "New River Branch".

The way I've heard it described, is that if you model using prototypical equipment, designs, operations, etc., but the line is fictional, it's "proto-freelance." Which is the way I do it.

In the end, it doesn't matter. You're king of the empire. You're the one to please. Have fun!

I think Boxcab has it right, "proto-lancing" is the term I've heard used for this.

But, that's a great way to do it. Use a real railroad, real setting, but someplace the real one didn't go. The what if's can be so wonderful.
