Okay, I'm kind of asking this "toung-n-cheek" so to speak. The question is, on steam engines, what did the crews do if they had to use the bathroom, either function? :tb-tongue: This is strictly brought up for the humor of it all. (This may be the wrong fourm but wasn't sure where to put such a topic.)
you would use the coal bunker for #2. You could use the coal scoop to "catch" ,or you would scoop it up and pitch it in the firebox. It would be incinerated immediately. For # 1 you could use the coal bunker or do it the way it is still done today... stand in the gangway, grasp the grabiron with your free hand and let fly(not advisable in high speed or rough track). Today many engineers I know(me included) do not like to use the closet, especially when or if you have a conductor who cant or wont handle the throttle. Just step out the engineers door, do you thing over the gangway railing. That way you can see what is ahead of your train... Beware photographers!!!! CT
IIRC, there was a sign in every New York Central coach and pullman bathroom that said in effect - Do NOT Flush Toilet While Train Is Standing In A Station!
:tb-embarrassed::tb-err: There was one of those signs on the train I took to Florida as a 12yo. Envison: 12yo, ADD, Limited vision, alone, eating lots and lots, I never saw the sign until the very upset conductor pointed it out. Tooooo late. I ruined someone's day.:tb-err:
