I took a trip out west a few weeks ago and was able to spend a great day on Tehachapi w/ Jeff aka 4X2DSP. It was a little chilly, and the sunny was somewhat shy in the morning, but all in all it was a great day. And you can't complain about catching a couple of clean warbonnets on the point in 2008 - life is good Here's how we started the day - mighty cold and windy in Mojave, as a southbound ballast train passes the old signal bridge: We then hiked the hill on the south side of Hwy 58 at Woodford for some fresh angles. First up is a BNSF stacker below the Woodford reservior: And a SB BNSF bare tables train rounding the Keene horseshoe:
A BNSF train had stalled at Rowen, so a light helper set was sent up from Bakersfield. Here it is at Cliff - we mountain biked in from Bealville, and this was the only movement we saw in 3 hours.... Here it is after doing it's thing, and heading back down the hill exiting Tunnel 3 in Clear Creek Ravine. Pretty cool helper set, 2 Dash 8's, a Warbonnet and a H1. And another Warbonnet, this time 4707 leads a southbound manifest around the Caliente horseshoe
Them old signal bridges are nice! glad they're still around!:teeth: Looks really dry around down there, I think I need a Pepsi!
Hmmm... 4707, I did some switching on that train that morning in Bakersfield. We added some cars to it. Small world...
Nice view. If I lived in this vicinity, sitting here here all day, watching trains, would be high on my list. Boxcab E50
There definitely would not be any trains sneaking past this viewpoint. I wonder what the track speed is? Boxcab E50
23 MPH. Average uphill speed is around 16-18. Downhill speed depends on your tons per operative brake and tons per operative dynamic brake axle.
