    hey guys,
im new to the board, and i am wanting to build a N scale layout for a dorm/small apartment w/ a maximum size of 3x5, i wouldnt mind going smaller, but i think 2x4 would be the smallest. well, let me know what yall have! please send me some pictures of your layouts too! thanks,

    Hey!

Awesome I'm doing the same thing. I've been doing HO for a long time, and when I came here to Cal Poly just a few months ago I started a 3'x6' N scale that fits under my bed in this cramped dorm. I crammed a helluva lotta track into my space, but there is a ton you can do with that space in N scale.

Please take a look at my pics here

Heres my trackplan and one of my pics:

I'll be happy to answer any questions...I built the entire thing here in the dorm with very limited tools etc.

    ...and welcome of course!

I think we're all glad to help but you would definitely benefit from browsing some of the older threads, your topic has been discussed in detail in the last several months.

    awesome, you guys rock!

i have acess to pretty much all the tools that you could imagine. so that wont be a problem.

derek, first, over you did the high rails for your trackbed, what did youuse to bring the land up to meet the rails? im assuming some form of foam, but where did you get it? thanks,

My multiple grades and etc. etc. were done using Woodland Scenics Subterrain products which I highly recommend. It's an easy to use system of inclines and risers made of foam cut on the sides so it bends to any radius. Check it out at their website http://www.woodlandscenics.com
They explain it there and you can kinda see how it works on my pictures at Railimages I refered to above. It takes a lot of hassle out of making different track levels. Most good hobby shops carry it now I believe.

All I have is a 2" foam base held together with the 1x4 poplar around the sides. Basically, I drew the trackplan on my foam base, then laid the WS Subterrain foam inclines and risers over the trackplan glued down with Liquid Nails.

One thought- I am also planning an N-scale empire with limited space. Right now, I'm planning on building 2x4 N-trak modules, which have the advantages that they will take little space but can be added together to make as large a layout as I could wish. The downside is that any one module is of limited utility. [IMG]

okay, i pretty much have a layout design figured out, it is going to be 3x5 and i will use 2x4 benchwork with a 1/4 particle board top, that sound good to everyone else? as far as the rest, i would like to post the design i have come up with, i created it w/ Atlas RTS and i have NO clue how to load a shot of it, any suggestions?
    -thanks,

I'm not familiar with the Atlas program but Windows "printscreen" works with anything. Zoom out or whatever so you can see the entire plan in the window, then hit "Alt" and "printscreen" at the same time. This will copy an image of the window to the clipboard, and you can paste it as an image into an imaging program or whatever and save it as an image file.

To get it into a post on Trainboard you'll probably have to sign up for an account at www.railimages.com to host the image, then you use UBB code in a Trainboard post to post the image which is linked to the image at Railimages.

    Hi, all,

I have a small 4' x 4' layout, comprised of two 2' x 4' modules placed back to back. I happen to like big scenery (within the space that I have), hence my design as follows:
