Has anyone seen this set before? http://www.trainxchange.com/images/Posted%20to%20Web/711outfit.JPG

They claim it was a set, but I can't find any info on it. They say it includes 2328 Burlington GP-7 and (this is what baffles me) Red-stripe 2442, 2442, 2444, & 2446 passenger cars. I can't find any info on these cars.

    Anyone have a clue?

I was into Lionel, and American Flyer, all through my youth. (1950's, 1960's.) And even had some post service/marriage. Will never lose my love for those trains!

OK. From memory, here are few thoughts- Lionel, (and Am Flyer, and Marx, etc.), had uncatalogued sets. So possibly this is one.

Everything you describe was made in both 1955, and 1956.

Worst potential troubles- On the GP, body shell screw holes crack easily. Even on NOS stuff that's only been sitting on shelves.

Also, if it's ever seen use, beware battery damage for the diesel's horn.

    HTH?

    Welcome aboard!

Thanx for the info. I'll keep my eyes open for the red striped cars. They would go nice with the GP.

I found this set in one of my references. It is set #1562W made in 1956 withe the 2328 and the 2442,2442,2444 and 2446 cars. This set is pretty rare with the value around 1800 for excellent condition.

The red-striped cars were made in 1956 and are silver with red lettering and red window stripes. The 2442 is the dome "Clifton, the 2444 is the pullman "Newark", and the 2446 is the observation "Summit." These cars can be found with some looking with values in the 100-150 range for each. There is also the much rarer separate sale 2445 pullman "Elizabeth" that matches the set.

    Hey Peter-

Just for fun, am wondering if you could look up a set for me?

I'm not certain the depth of your reference materials, but I am thinking of one I had back in high school days. Mid-1960's. This was my very favorite!

It was O-27. Came with a figure 8 of track, and transformer. Contained the A-A set of #211 Texas Special ALCos. A flat car with cable spools, red Lionel caboose. (Don't recall if lettered other than Lionel.) A gondola in the blue-green color, (sort of like Penn Central green), with several of the white cylinders. And perhaps the giraffe car. Plus a couple of other cars.

    Anything fit this description?

I only found one set - #11560 made in 1965-66 with the 211 alcos that fits your description. The set had a 6473 horse transport car, a 6176 yellow LV hopper, a 6142 gondola, a 6465 two-dome tankcar and the 6059 red M&StL caboose. The flatcar (probably 6402) came in other sets that year but not this one. Substitutions were common however.

    Peter-

That's probably the one. It did have horse car. And the flat car w/orange cable spools. Did not have a yellow LV hopper. The reason I recall the flat car so well, is it was light. Would derail somewhat easily.

Maybe some day, I'll stumble across one of these, and even have a few dollars at the same time. ha ha. Would love to have one, just to set it up at Christmas.
