October 27, 1940 - Lafayette, Indiana CCCStL class " J-1d " 4-6-4 Hudson #5377 Roger Hensley Collection Here is NYC (Illinois Division) dispatcher H. C. Settlemoir practicing the now "lost art" of railroad telegraphy with a home-made rig on the kitchen table, in 1941. CAPT Rex Settlemoir
Wow, double headed Hudsons. Thanks, Roger. I remember trying to learn to telegraph. Never could get any word speed.
While in college I went to the Radio Club's equipment loft and was amazed at the ability of the operator. He was a classmate and we chatted for quite awhile while he monitored the Net. Every so often he would immediately turn his attention from me and start writing, respond with his Bug, then return to our conversation right where we left off. Being slightly dyslexic, I was not able to comprehend his ability. However, I was extremely impressed, and determined at that moment that it would be waste of everybody's time for me to try to learn the key. OK, I did learn .... . _. ._. _.__ , but after that, forget it...LOL
