Here is my 3D printed FM H10-44 the shortie the shell is 48 feet in Z scale! It seem the width is also a problem another walkway has to be remove it fit shortie!
Wheels from an AZL GP30 have been put into the shorty truck. The truck needed some trimming to make room for the wheel flanges and the gear axle needed to be cut shorter by a hair. The wheels fit directly into the axles without any other modifications. I plan on designing a 3D printable 40 foot chassis that will mount the motor and the trucks the same way the original Rokuhan chassis did. It should open some opportunities to make some switching locomotives. Shorty Trucks with AZL wheels by shortpainter posted Mar 2, 2018 at 10:44 PM
Here are some pics of my progress last night just before the windstorm knocked our power out and left me sitting here in the dark. With a little more trimming i was able to fit the the truck mount and motor into one of Shapeways SW1500. I still need to set the truck mount a little deeper into the cab area finish the motor mount and re fabricate a front truck mount.
I have designed a 3D printable custom chassis to mount the Shorty's motor and trucks. I also designed a SW9/1200 shell and trucks. These all passed the test by Shapeways modeling tools. The shell will be a raw brass print, the chassis is HP Nylon and the trucks will be FXD prints. The metal weights that come with shorty will fit in the space directly below the motor mount.I have added dimples to the shell to mark where to drill holes for handrails. The first test print of the chassis will be delivered soon. I will make everything available in the Shapeways store after I verify the parts fit properly.
Thanks! The SW9/1200 chassis, shell and trucks will be available via Shapeways in a few weeks. The shorty is sold at all Z scale retailers and must be torn apart in order to fit it's guts(motor, trucks, circuit board) into this new chassis and shell. The good news is that it's not difficult to take the shorty apart. Check out this Southern Pacific version that just got approved for a raw brass print. I think I'll do a CN version next. I plan on having three different truck types available as well. Now I just gotta figure out how to do the hand rails...
It does look good and fun modelling project. Might a matching calf or slug be a future development ? Sent from my 2PS64 using Tapatalk
You should contact Tim Beuhring aka Hobo Tim to see if he can etch some brass handrails. I am sure he wouls want to help with this project.
you know what would be real neat, is if you were able to make a cab interior complete with an engineer poking his head out the side window, which could be illuminated and look super detailed. Then your etched brass detail parts could be used to super detail the model. Think etched brass hood panels and doors that can selectively be left propped open. Why not make a super detailed masterpiece, using the shapeways part as the base instead of trying to compromise detail like Searails often does with their castings.
Etched brass handrails would be preferable. Teaming up with somebody else would ensure that everybody's handrails were the same. Mounting holes/slots could be printed in. I like the idea of super detailing it. We don't usually get a model that we can do that to without a lot of prep work before doing it. Coincidently, I just ordered some BLMA detailing parts. They are on the way. Keep us up to date on your progress. Thanks for what you are doing. Jim
