Two of my latest Kato SD45's that I backdated to the earlier "switcher" scheme. I overpainted the factory Rio Grande logo and nose > redecalled both I've also worked out that it's easier to weather my locos with the shell / fuel tank / truck sideframes separate from the chassis > saves time by not having to mask wheels + pick ups. I also tried something for the first time my last 5-6 SD45's & used a microbrush to apply Neolube to the brass lug & pick up strip blackening them & making them virtually invisible

One of my last Kato SD45's road no. 5316 is finally ready to hit the rails. I tried to create the burn under the dynamic brake blister using some rust coloured chalk. Also removed the fuel tank & side frames to get them weathered how I wanted Powered by a TCS CN decoder

Kato SD45 #5324 - just got done with the weathering on this unit using a photo of similar aged unit for reference. I removed the fuel tank & sideframes on this loco to get a contrasting effect from road grime & seemed to work OK This is one of many custom jobs that I've had going for about the past 6 months: - I repainted + decalled to match the earlier Rio Grande SD45's > no logo on nose + smaller logo on body - Detailed with SE plow, BLMA MU hoses + sunshades - Weathered with a subtle RR Tie / gray overspray + Tamiya chalks + drybrushing - A fellow modeller was kind enough to install TCS CN decoder for me, as DCC stuff isn't my favourite part of the hobby

MT Z scale coupler #905 - fitted into a Kato SD45 N coupler box. I trimmed the front top & bottom of the coupler box to allow the shorter shank clearance

SD45 # 5327 pretty much ready to roll. BLMA MU hoses / plow / cab sunshades added. Only have lightly weathered this unit til now > maybe will add to later. I still need to figure out a way to get an MT Z scale #905 coupler on front which to me look closer to scale

SD45's - 4 x units with BLMA sunshades fitted ready for reassembly & some weathering. To make the best use of my limited modelling time, I try to combine similar projects to save on set up time etc. I pretty much completed the same step on each of these locos as I went

SD50 #5510 - I made these number boards using MS Word (inspired by Flash Blackman's article in NSR) but they are not decals - just the number boards printed onto high grade photo paper & sealed with flat finish

Kato SD45 - I still prefer the finish & control I get with the Floquils so I matched D&RGW Gold by mixing a 50/50 UP Light Orange + Reefer Yellow.

Kato SD45: One shell pretty much ready for a gloss coat & decals. Real easy right now to paint the handrails white while separate from the body shell

Kato SD45's: After painting my earlier units black > then masking > then painting the sills / pilots / numberboards gold, I found it was easier to do the reverse. I now mask off the painted gold & overspray the black Also painted the plows to match & these are much easier to weather before adding MU hoses & couplers.

Kato NW2 0999 - "I know D&RGW NW2 should be numbered 100, but I didn't have the last digit left on my decal sheet & wanted to put the project to bed" Keen Rio Grande guys may also notice my use of "modellers licence" re the lack of tiger stripes wrap around the long hood: The Microscale stripes only wrap around this far.

Kato NW2 rear 0998 - Decalling the tiger stripes on the rear of the cab was a challenge but I pretty much decalled the whole cab / applied about 4-5 coats of Microsol & then used a new #11 blade to slice the sheet for the windows
