I'm loving all these updates. As I recall your old layout was an N scale layout with more emphasis on running, rather than switching.

How do you feel about this layout, now that it's up and running, in regard to the difference between the two layouts? Do you find the switching to be just as interesting as running? Do you miss being able to sit back and rail fan your trains hands-free?

(Maybe I should make this it's own discussion. Maybe I asked you this question before. )

Thanks I find switching much more satisfying than the old layout, now that I have a switch list the operating sessions last approx two hours and keeps a higher level of interest.

I did enjoy watching trains run on the n scale layout but after a while it became monotonous.

This layout is about operations and because of the size also allows detailing of areas, I believe at this stage the layout only has base scenery with a lot more detailing yet to occur.

    Thanks for the comments.

The last shot of you with your buddy running the layout really shows the social aspect of this layout. It seems like having a layout you can invite friends over to run with you is even more fun. I think that is one thing I've always wanted from a layout is being able to share it with other people like that; so many of us are lone wolf modelers.

Those are some really nice photos. I prefer switching also. It is a bit more interesting and watching trains run in a circle. I purposely built switching problems into each town and taking off with a 12 to 14 car local freight can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to complete an operating session. Make you think.

Yes, watching trains run over wide open terrain is awesome... for about an hour. Switching is the best way to keep things interesting. Now, do I wish I had more of a mainline run on my layout... Yes! But, I would not give up any switching industries to accomplish that! JMS

I get bored pretty quick, just going around the loop, no matter how big it is. But switching is usually always interesting for me, no matter how small or large. I is very interesting to watch people switch too, I mean folks have very different ways of switching. Some take 10 moves to do something that could have been done in 5 moves, but hey its their train right. The main lines can get interesting when a switcher or local ties up the main to switch.

But your MRR Paul, just looks like fun to me. And your rolling stock is outstanding too.

I guess I have the best of both worlds. A switching layout at home and a club with a good long main for running. Oh, and we do have operation nights once a month at the club. But the switching part is the best. That is why the New POC is going to be a point to point.

That is why I have a roundy round and a switching layout....and I plan to connect them to have the best of both worlds

I love watching these sort of videos, I would make some myself but my layout is not really ready for videoing...
