    Been a while! Here's a re-designed version of my "D" class 4-8-0.

    Original description:

ECL found that the D class 4-8-0's, originally built in 1926 needed modifications to stay more powerful. So, in 1936, the were rebuilt as such. The firebox, originally above the drivers and shallow, was now deeper and between the frames. The drivers were reduced from 80in to 74in to increase tractive effort. Finally, an Elesco feedwater heater was added.

    Tractive effort: 55,441lb

    Driver diameter: 74"

    Cylinders (2): 26x28"

    Adhesive weight: 230,500 (115.25 tons)

Total Engine weight: 252,000lb (126 tons)

    Engine + Tender weight: 434,000lb (217 tons)

    Factor of adhesion: 4.77

    Heating surface: 4,020 sq ft

    Superheater: 690 sq ft

    Steam Pressure: 300 PSI

    Grate area: 50 sq ft

    Overall length: 98ft 2in

Wow! This one really just caught my eyes, as I only recently come to love the unique style of BLW Sharks. Not sure if I entirely like it, though, because the design appreciation of the sharknose really hinges on the style of the nose. Having a long, long body like that, even on an articulated frame would visually make them appear too long in terms of a side-length perspective and would draw the eyes away from the main visual feature which is their shark-styled nose.

In reality, though, my favorite kit-bashed locomotives were the RS3m models that the MKT put together, combining an Alco frame, cab and short hood with an EMD style geep long hood. I like the modelling possibilities one could draw from that.

In 1952, ECL took delivery of their largest 4-8-0 yet. Highly impressed by the Chapelon 240P and L. D. Porta's "Argentina" 4-8-0's, and had Porta design this locomotive for them. Unlike Argentina, however, Porta had the freedom of designing a completely new locomotive instead of rebuilding an existing one.

It was a 3 cylinder compound, with 1 hp cylinder. It was semi streamlined, and, most importantly, had a Gas Producer Combustion system and double Lempor ejectors.

Carolina was highly successful, easily matching the 4-8-2's and 4-8-4's that replaced it's smaller cousins. It could easily hold a 2,000 tonne train at 70mph on the level, and 50mph on a 2% grade. At one point, it reached 110mph with a 1,000 tonne passenger train.

ECL was highly impressed, and built 3 more. They were constantly updated as Porta learned more about squeezing more power more economically. The last modification was in the late 1980's.

At starting, the driver can admit live steam to LP cylinders at 210psi.

    Tractive effort: 52,400lb (62,200lb starting)

    Driver diameter: 80"

    Cylinders HP (1): 22x26"

    Cylinders LP (2): 27x26"

    Adhesive weight: 232,000lb (116t)

    Total Engine weight: 250,000lb (125t)

    Engine + Tender weight: 432,000lb (216t)

Factor of adhesion: 4.42 (3.72 starting)

    Heating surface: 4,150 sq ft

    Superheater: 975 sq ft

    Steam Pressure: 350psi

    Grate area: 50 ft sq

    Overall length: 100' 0"

No, I'm not thinking what you think I am. I'm remembering Japanese trains with pink and purple stripes, purple/yellow and pastel pink diesels and sky blue/pink steam in India, also hot pink taxis in Thailand, pale pink kei trucks in Japan, pink signage in multiple countries... I guess I'm an Asian at heart. ;) They don't seem to attach a stigma to painting things pink.

With that color it must have an impressive safety record - once you notice it (hard not to), you can't take your eyes off of it!!

There is a site for posting loco drawings on. http://www.paintshop.railfan.net although not updated for several yearsUseful when planning schemes.
For me, Amtrak has never happened, the Milwaukee reorganised and electrified throughout the system

I agree. Since I have tunnel vision (I see about 4"s across at working distance from the screen), the beauty is not lost to me. Over all - it is just fantasy.
