it's just too expensive to me at this point (and I'm building on a budget).
Interesting we haven't heard about layouts built with slabs of foamboard in this forum..
has anybody done one?

Bob,
My roadbed will be secured directly to the foam insulation layout base [IMG]. The mainline will be raised by placing the roadbed on foamboard, glued to the foam insulation base. Essentially it will be foam on foam with roadbed. Happy Modeling!!

Jim,
Couldn't complain. Besides the sweatsirts, socks & underwear, I got a Pentrex video, "Sunrise to Sunset at Gibbon Jct.", a
Leatherman pocket tool (I'm a Scouter, and it comes in real handy), and some neat freight cars from the local hobby shop.
Makes up for the trip I made to the frozen tundra of texas, Arkansas & Oklahoma (lotsa ice, no electricity- hope they cope).

I know what you mean about the cold...spent Christmas in northern Mississippi...may as well have been in the arctic. Got back to Montrose New Year's day to 50+ degree temps...never thought the South could be colder than Colorado!! Happy Modeling!!

I do just that Bruce, I pin down all my track then ballast it. Once the ballast has dried I don't remove the track pins.

The problem you CAN run into is the nails CAN be tapped down too far and the track CAN get out of gauge. I only leave in nails at track ends and joints. Other than that, I take them out. Also less chance of snaging a coupler trip pin with the nails out.
