Looking at switching layouts I'm wondering if there are any design patterns or prototypes ideas for small (N scale 4' x 1') industrial switching layouts that could be utilized to minimize the number of short stop and start moves. I'm talking about replacing features like short switchbacks that only allow locomotives to move a few inches with longer sweeping moves that work well with momentum is turned on. To help I am working with short engines like the 44 tonner and am willing to work with a smaller number of short rolling stock. I also have access to tight enough curves (Tomix) to make a complete 180 degree turn in under 12", which opens up possiblities for folding a 7' x 6" into a 4' x 1'.
The idea that comes to my mind is the Inglenook Sidings concept. See Inglenook Sidings Shunting Puzzle and Micro Layout Design Gallery I have an Inglenook arrangement on the Ntrak module I'm building, it occupies approx. 6 by 48 inches.
